I am still two RR behind and I have another coming up this weekend, so I better get to writing!! The end of September was Half Marathon #3. The Quad Cities Marathon was SUPPOSED to be my first HM. I thought it would take me that long to prepare myself for it! HA! Little did I know. QCM was a HUGE running weekend for our little Rose Running Clan. Three generations took part in various running event throughout the weekend, and it makes me so proud to see my family spend quality time together doing healthy activities. From the QC Marathon website "The flat and fast course features one of the finest, most scenic river views in the country. It covers 5 races, 4 cities, 3 bridges, 2 states, and 1 island, all along the mighty Mississippi River. "
Our racing weekend, started on Saturday with the Kids Micro Marathon. The QCM offers the kids 3 distances to choose from: 1/4, 1/2 or full mile. They can do whatever they want and everyone gets a Finisher's Medal. They started the 1/4 mile and Hayden ran that (with Mommy), and then he decided he wasn't done running so he did the 1/2 mile also. I asked him if he was done, and he said yes. THEN they started the mile distance and he saw all the kids running and says "Mommy, I want to RUN!" So we did. All the volunteers seemed to be very impressed that he did all 3 distances! He was a little running machine! I tried to get him to take it easy, and by the end of the mile he was pretty tired, but then we had some pizza. They really put on a great event and I was happy to be able to include Hayden in the weekend. Here are some pictures for Hayden’s race day:
He was a little tuckered out after his race(s):
On race day, Laurie, Jim, Matthew and I all geared up for our races. Jim ran the 5K and Laurie, Matthew and I ran the Half Marathon. It was Matthew’s first Half. He and Laurie ran the whole thing together. am so proud of Matthew. I think he has caught the HM bug, but maybe not as severely as Laurie and I. It was a pretty overcast day. Not too bad for running, except for the last 3 miles when it started to rain. And by rain, I mean pour, but there was not any lightening so we were fine to keep running. I was soaked, my feet were BEYOND soaked (no blisters though) and I was FREEZING, but I finished. Not a PR, but a standard finish time for me. I was kind of disappointed because the Post-Race Party, which I have heard is VERY fun, was… dampened… by the storm. I waited at the Finish, cuddled under my mylar blanket, for Matthew and Laurie to come in. They had a show planned for their finish crossing, and they delivered! They decided to ‘fly’ and come in for a landing.
All in all, I had a lot of fun, despite the rain. One thing I love about all my races so far, is that each one has been so special for different reasons: Distance Classic was my first Half. NewBo was slow, steady and so much fun to run with Laurie. QCM was a family affair. (And I met Dave Mari, Half Fanatic extraordinaire!) Des Moines (race report is still pending) was my Half Fanatic Qualifier. Haunted Hustle is coming up this weekend and I know it is going to be special for its own reasons, too. I don’t feel like I am just running races, it has become an awesome way to make memories. I feel like I am LIVING my life. I am meeting new and amazing people (more of that to come in the DM RR). I want to be able to convey the feelings I have about each of the HMs I have done, but I think the majority of it remains one of those situations where I cannot adequately express what it means to me so instead I hold them close to my heart. In the back of my mind, I know that all of this could end at any moment. I know that one morning I could wake up and my body won’t work the way it is supposed to. It’s the reality I have accepted living with my MS. I think I am finally in a place where I can be aware of the possibilities, but I don’t have to let it stop me from doing the things I want to do while I am able to do them. I will make my memories, and then, when/if that day ever comes, then I will deal with it then. Until that time, I am going to live it up and run like a Fanatic!
Here are the standard pictures!!
This one is us trying to WARM UP
Someone else was tuckered out after his race too!
