Crossfit... this might work for me...

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

I person I know from work has opened a Crossfit gym/training center in my town. The business totally took off where they had to expand and they made it 24/7 over the process of about 2 years. I have heard nothing but good things coming from my other friends who have been doing it, guys who are really into P90x etc... Also, I found out that my workplace offers local gift certificates as part of its wellness program and the Crossfit membership is covered by it so on top of being reasonably priced to start, I get a nice discount.

I stopped in for a look and like what I see. It is very inexpensive compared to working with a personal trainer and it looke like what I am needing.

Structure.

I can no longer justify the cost of a trainer ( i have been without a trainer since August) but I need the structure as well as some fellowship. I think this is going to work.

I am going to an orientation session this Thursday for a free workout.

The best part of all is that it is right on the way to and from work. I pass it everyday and it is 24/7 access much like any other 24/7 gym. I have a pretty good feeling about this. The also offer classes as well for really reasonable.

This winter is going to basically a time to really knuckle down and lose a substantial amount of weight and pursue all around fitness so I can be in a position TO train for a TRI or another marathon.

I think opportunity has presented itself and I'm ready.

Hi - hmm, how to put this. It's not your weight that is stopping you from doing an ironman. It just isn't. How do I know. Well, I have two friends, who are much heavier than you are, who have done not only one ironman, but in one persons case, at least 8 that I know of. People forget that triathlons are about what is in your head. It's about training, AND about your mental state. A good friend of mine used to be a professional triathlete. He holds course records for Silverman and other really tough races. He told me once that every single time he is out there, he has that mental thought - What the Hell Am I doing out here!!!! I was shocked when he told me. Every time I do a triathlon, I am at risk of not finishing, but I do. Why am I at risk - I am old, fat, and have only 50% of my lungs and am frankly terrified of my bike. However, I have done 3 sprints, and 4 olympics. Go ahead and join a gym. But my advice -- go join team in training. Raise the money to help cure cancer. Meet a wonderful bunch of people who will train with you, party with you, ship your stuff to Hawaii (yes, hawaii. Lavaman is a terrific race!!!), and who will cheer you on. I'll be there, chugging along, slowly, likely to be dfl as my husband puts it, but ahead of those people who quit, or who didn't get off their couch and try. I doubt, even if I lose the weight that I will ever be very "good", as in "fast" at triathlon. The lungs and my fear of the bike are just too big a deal. However, there is no doubt in my mind that if I decided to do a half iron or an ironman that if I did them with team in training that I would cross that finish line. Team in training also has an iron team. Everyone I know who has done it has loved, loved, loved it. Only one person that I know of, my good friend Donella, didn't make the cutoff. She missed by just a few minutes, although she did finish the race. She went back the next year, and did Iron Team again, and I am thrilled to tell you that she finished within the time cutoff at ironman canada this year. If you are serious about doing an ironman, or a half iron, and you need to meet people to workout with, and who can really train you how to do it, team in training absolutely will get you there!!! Your weight won't matter - if you have health issues, they won't matter. They will help you figure out how to get it done. If you think I'm kidding, go to youtube, and watch a video about Louie Bonpua - he did ironman canada while suffering from leukemia. You will be inspired. You will make friends. You will get farther on your journey and your dreams of being half iron, or completely iron, no matter what your weight. Plus, I suspect that it will help with your weight. Okay -I'm off my high horse now. I really hope you do this. It will change your life!

I think that is a wonderful choice for you! I hope you enjoy it! I tried it once a few months ago and didn't care for the particular facility. (I didn't feel they were safety consience enough.) But, CrossFit is still on my list of things to do! Like you said, the fellowship & structure would be wonderful!!! And, I love the plyometrics part!

Let us know how it goes! (Oh, and we have multiple facilities around here, so I have more to choose from! Yeah!)

I do like P90X myself and all the beachbody workouts (and I'm a beachbody coach so I get great discounts) But I also love to try new things. I have heard alot about crossfit, let me know how you like it. I would love to know what you think. I believe any workout that motivates you and that you enjoy is the best workout for you. Everyone is different and it sounds like you may have found the perfect thing for you so that's awesome, good luck!

Robert, from my understanding CF will be just what you need to lose those pounds. Its tough but just do what you can and build from there. I have never done so I will be watching to see how it goes for you. Best wishes!

I know a few people who absolutely love Crossfit. I wish I had one that was convenient because it is something I would LOVE. I really enjoyed P90X and am starting another round in a few weeks. Good luck with your orientation. I've heard that is one tough monster. Can't wait to hear all about it.
