A Very Good Sunday

Sunday, October 23, 2011

We did a road trip this morning to locate the Grange Hall where we will hold a Baby Shower next Saturday for the soon to arrive new Grand Daughter, Ruby. She is due in January, but in the Laural Highlands, roads can get tricky early. Still saw some great fall color on the trees. I was afraid we had missed it all, but I was rewarded with nice color and blue skies. On the way home, we decided to take a more scenic route as the interstate was having long traffic jams due to construction, yes on Sunday.

We stopped at one of our favorite Big Lots and found a wealth of Bob's Red Mill Products. We had fun shopping for super healthy products that are harder to find at our local stores and we never see such variety. Then I walked through canned good and found lots of canned unsalted veggies, so I came home with lots of great tomato products, canned beans, some new basil, and hot chili sauce that I have been looking for locally to no avail. Most of the Bob's products will be double wrapped and go in the freezer. Great way to keep grains, beans, seeds, etc very fresh. I always freeze my ground flaxseed, so it does not get rancid. Also found Wasabi Edamame - a tasty tiny treat in my lunch.

We are cleaning in the kitchen so fixing food for the shower will be easy and efficient. Clearing counters, starting a crock pot of bean/vegetable soup, running the dishwasher, assembling non-perishable ingredients. My daughter and the grand daughters will be in on Friday, but a busy work week means do this now.
We had our first frost and it was a real one, looked like snow. But today is pleasant, sweatshirt weather. I still see plenty of green on the young trees around the garden, but our maples are bare, and the oaks have gone from red to brown. An October day to savor, this is a very good Sunday.
