Need help breaking my sugar addiction!

Saturday, October 22, 2011

I do fine for a few days and then go on a sugar binge. I know I shouldn't and I realize what I am doing but don't/can't stop. Then I slowly get back to normal with less and less sugar every day. Then, again, after a few days of being good about sugar, I fall again.

I already don't have very much sugar in the house (I do have my 90% dark chocolate!). My "binges" usually occur at our restaurant in the afternoon.

Any suggestions would be helpful!

If the craving hits about the same time every afternoon, can you find a subsitute ritual for it? Like a sit down cup of tea or a few minutes meditation. I'm not saying it isn't an addicition, but so many times we find out selves with a bad habit, and we allow it to control us.

"Just Say NO!" really doesn't work all that well, you need to replace the daily eating of sugar with something else that will give you satisfaction.

It IS a drug, and that's why we crave it & break down and binge. I'm working at breaking my whole family's sugar addiction. Not keeping it in the house is a huge stress, but you also don't want to deprive yourself completely or you WILL binge when you're around it. Focus on cutting back instead of stopping completely. Go for a natural sugar snack when you get the urge. Something like fruit, fruit salad, smoothies. I'm still wanting to try out healthy snack recipes that I've found here, but I haven't had time to do so just yet. Things like apple crisp or homemade granola bars could help the urges without being full of processed junk.

Good luck!

Char, you are one step ahead of me. At least you don't have a lot of sugar in the house. I have stocked up and keep it hidden for "special things", but I keep eating it now almost on a daily basis. I understand where you are coming from. I can sometimes go for a whole week before I cave in and eat lots of sugar. Please let me know if you find something that works for you. I have tried the sugar free gum, and it's sweet enough that it just makes me want more sugar. I like the idea about associating sugar with negative images, but I'm not sure I can do it. Good luck and don't give up!

Char; You might read some articles on sugar to find out that it is a drug and harmful to your system. I found some sugar free coffee flavored candies that helps me a bit.
I can't have a candy dish per say....the FL ants would find it, then the trbl begins.
You have done remarkably well for quite some time, so I know you can do it. Don't quit now.. I sure don't want you to make it easy for me to catch up with you. SO, BEHAVE or I will personally come emoticon ur butt! MA

What helps me is chewing sugarless gum. If I have gum in my mouth I can't put anything else in. If you can chew gum at work, it might help you. emoticon

It's so hard. The only thing that works for me is avoiding as much as possible. Think how much better you feel without it and maybe make some new associations. What about chewing gum at work or having a sugar-free losenger to pop in your mouth when you eye those wonderful looking pastries? Make sure you drink a lot of water, too. For some reason, water helps me curb my sweet tooth. Not sure why. Be strong. You can do it. You don't need the extra sugar. You are worth fighting the urges. They don't control you.

Well, since you cannot tell your boss to shove it (grin), I suggest you start associating sugar with strong negative images. Instead of looking at a pastry and saying "that looks good, I shouldn't have one." Say, "yuck! All that sugar is enough to make me sick." It takes some time but it works! Pretty soon you won't want to eat the pastries (or whatever sugary thing you're binge eating now).
