Another Rant: Chain Restaurants Are Lying!

Ugh! I'm steaming!!!

OK... Here's my latest rant. I've determined that there are no healthy restaurants between Washington, DC and Danville, VA.

Woke up at 5am. Had a nice healthy breakfast at 6:30am. Got on the road and I drove to Danville today. So far, so good, right?


The entire trip I could not find a healthy snack. Not one 7-Eleven along the route. (All I wanted was a cup of yogurt.) When I started feeling dizzy, I bit the bullet, pulled into one those cheezy Quickie Gas Station/Redneck Bait shops. I must have read every single little snack bag (aka garbage) & finally settled on 2 tiny bags of salty junk (popcorn & cheese puffs). Not too much damage for a snack.

Well, then I finally get to Danville around 1:30pm. I'm starving. I go to Ruby Tuesday. I decide "against" the salad bar thinking that a healthy choice meal would be more filling and probably healthier.


I look at the menu and see a lovely Petite Sirloin with roasted spaghetti squash& grilled zucchini. It's part of their "Fit & Trim" menu and is listed as 537 calories.


I get back to the hotel tonight and decide to enter the real facts from the Ruby Tuesday Nutrition info on their Website. Look what I really had for lunch:

706 Calories (the steak alone was 611 calories)
41 Carbs
41 Fat
45 Protein (I guess this is the upside???)

So there you have it. Another chain restaurant flat out lying on their printed menu! How do these guys get away with this?

    It's the restaurants and lack of physical movement, topped with the packaged processed foods that is killing middle aged Americans, and making Obese children in this country! You just keep sharing!

    Thanks for the info. I guess I'm just naive... I take people (restaurants)at their word. What is strange is how on the news and in papers we constantly read about America being the heaviest country. That people have to eat better but then they give us really no option when you sit down at a restaurant. Have you contacted Ruby Tuesday via email to ask them why they're lying? If they give no response, call a local news team. I'm sure that restaurant is not the only one doing it. And I'm sure I'm not the only one that falls for the lies of the "Fit & Trim" menu.

    We eat out as little as possible. We don't travel a lot though without a plan because there is no where to go here. If an emergency came up, it would be a plane ride(just as bad calorie wise), not a drive. It is amazing that restaurants can get away with that. Not enough people really care yet.

    All the more reason to enter all food into my food tracker. I just got an iPad2. Yippee! I can now carry it with me everywhere I go. Now these guys can't get me anymore. I can see what's in their food BEFORE I order anything.

    I may have a new mission. Consumer REVENGE! I'm going to let everyone I know about these evil restaurants.

    I have long determined that the chain restaurants like Ruby Tuesday and Chili's really have a death wish for their customers. Some of their menu items have enough sodium to cover 3 or 4 days worth of sodium limit too! Not to mention the fat and calorie content of some of their items.

    Yeah. I know I should have healthy snacks. Usually I do have some things with me. But this trip was an emergency. I didn't have any time to pack. Thanks for the reminder. I guess I forgot how bad it is out there.

    I'm still licking my wounds. Not sure if you read my other rant (Eat This - Not That). I guess I'm so angry that these restaurants have the gall to lie on their menus. How can they quote one calorie count & provide you with another? I think that's what has me so upset.

    Oh well, que sera sera. . .

    Hope you feel better soon. Stocking the car with healthy snacks and a cooler with bottled water, fresh fruits, and veggies would be the way to travel; you can't count on finding healthy stuff in a pinch. I found out the hard way with the "healthy" salad at Applebee's; you're not alone. It was loaded with junk.
