My first RV trip to the beautiful SouthWest!

Thursday, October 20, 2011

I just returned from my virgin RV trip to the beautiful SouthWest. What an experience! My husband and I had many plans to travel after he retired. God had other plans for us though. My husband died of a heart attack just 3 days after his last day of work. Six years later, I have retired. I was a bit anxious about buying an RV and travelling alone, but I am determined to live our dreams.

My trip took me and my Bostons, Fred & Sanford, from MD to Florida to pick up my Aunt and then off to NM. We knew we were headed to Albuquerque, but had no plans from there. It didn’t take us long to figure out that there was plenty to see…… Old Town Albuquerque, Santa Fe, the Turquoise Trail, the many galleries, artists and Native American craft fairs.

Since we were so close, we decided to tour the Grand Canyon and the Red Rocks of Sedona AZ. Pictures can not capture the vast beauty of this area.

After 4 days, we headed back to Albuquerque to catch the tail end of the balloon festival. What a sight to see from our campsight early that morning!

Finally, we had to start heading back east. Rather than take the same route, we decided to stop in Durant, OK to visit with my lapband sister, Darla Emerson and her hubby. We have exchanged many an e-mail and were both so excited to finally meet in person. Darla & Bruce work for the Choctaw Nation. They treated us to a very nice dinner and breakfast before saying goodbye.

After dropping my Aunt off in Florida, the boys and I head home to cooler weather, autumn leaves falling and lots of memories to share with friends and family. Even was pleasantly surprised to find that I had lost 2lbs! Normally, I gain 5 lbs in a week’s vacation! We ate most of our meals in the RV but often ate lunch as we were out and about. The band is at a good place for me I think. It let me know when I was eating too fast or not chewing enough. It slows me down so I don’t eat as much. All in all, I’m really pleased.
I found that RVing is my cup of tea and already have plans for another big trip out West next year. Wyoming….here I come!

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's passing.

How exciting to go RVing! My husband and I have talked many times about where and how we want to travel after retirement. I'm not sure if an RV is in our future because I'm terrified of driving one, but you never know. I do know that I can't wait to visit new and exciting places.

Congrats on the wonderful trip!
