Today I reached one of my goals! I set the goal to bike 500 miles this summer season. Thankfully here in Iowa we have had some beautiful warm fall weather. I am excited that I could reach this goal for many reasons and I will discuss some of those. I would also like to add that I learned a lot about myself during this goal.
First, when I set this goal it was out of frustration. I was having a heck of a time recovering from a foot injury (Feb) from skiing. The doctor told me not to plan on much activity for a year. I did consult with him about my summer goal and he grudgingly agreed to "try it" with his supervision. I am happy to say that with not too much pain or set backs: I DID IT!!!
I travel about 50% of the time for work so it was difficult finding enough time to fit rides in.
I have always liked to bike. It gives me a feeling of true joy and freedom. By setting the goal of 500 miles, I was challenged to find new places to bike. I tried new trails, roads that travelled around lakes, horse paths, benefit rides and even a full moon night owl ride. Sometimes I rode alone but most of the time my husband rode too. It was great time together.
I used to be a fair weather rider. I picked the perfect day, temperature, route and climate. My mantra was NO WIND and NO Hills. But, guess what I found out. I can do wind AND hills at the same time!! It's not about how many miles you can go in one day. It is more about enjoyment. And once I got going I always enjoyed the ride. It gave me pride to feel I had broken out of the mold and become more adventurous. I learned to appreciate the nature around me and that included the "weather"!
I would like to thank all the Sparklers on the cycling team who continually encouraged me and answered questions or gave advise. You helped me reach my goal!
As a side note, the doctor said he is going to start suggesting biking for recovery.....HA!

    Very Cool! Congratulations. that was a huge goal and i'll bet you could even get in another 100 before it starts to snow up there!!

    That's a great update - Congratulations on meeting that goal and surpassing those other limitations. So often our minds have a way of creating these obstacles when in fact our bodies know we are totally capable to going beyond them.
