Wow, hitting the training peak for my first marathon is exhausting! Not this past weekend, but the one before, I did my first 20. I'd done 18 before that, and this past weekend I did another 18.
I'd debated about doing my 22 last weekend, but on the advice of the Mother Runners ( anothermotherrunner.com
), I opted for a stepback before tackling my last long run this coming weekend.
Last week, following my 20, I was TIRED. I ended up doing two decent mid-week runs, and skipping my ST. For the first time that I can remember, I didn't even feel guilty about skipping workouts. Normally I feel like I'm getting fatter and losing fitness with each day I miss (of my normal routine.. not on rest days!). That was not the case last week. Some other mother runners weighed in that peak training is supposed to feel that way! They're right!
My 18 miler "stepback" this past weekend rocked. I felt great, and RB had to keep asking me to slow down. Guess that little bit of rest helped! Here's the thing, though... I'm tired all over again! I had a decent run on Tuesday, but last night I went to Pilates and thought I was just going to collapse on my mat! I'm normally VERY strong in my core, but doggone if that class didn't kick my butt! There was one point, where we were doing leg lifts, that I simply could not make my body do another one. I'm talking total muscle failure. Mind you, I normally leave this class pleasantly pooped and about as strong as a wet noodle, but that's at the end of the class.
My guess is that the big miles have caught up with me, and I'm just going to have to suck it up for the rest of this week, and through this weekend's final long run. Then it's Welcome to Taper Town, and I can finally slack off!
