Feeling Defeated

It's been a while since I have blogged because I am not much of a blogger and don't always feel comfortable doing it. But, all week I was thinking I needed to get this out.

I have been struggling with some weight gain ever since I quit smoking two years ago. I had been at goal weight for a while before I quit. I kept up all my workouts and tracked my food, but I still have gained about 15 pounds. Now, over the past 6 months or so, I believe I am starting to go through menopause and my weight is going up more. It seems just looking at food makes me gain weight. I have been craving sweets like no tomorrow and I get ravenously hungry.

It's so hard to keep positive and motivated when nothing I do is working and I am finding myself slacking off my workouts and eating things I normally wouldn't eat. It's like my metabolism just stopped completely.
I had read where it takes a while for your body to reset after quitting smoking, but this is ridiculous.
I don't know what to do next. I am so frustrated that I worked hard to get in shape and now it's just slipping away and I feel powerless to stop it.
I am not sure where to go from here.

    How about allowing one cheat meal (or even day) a week?
Maybe that will help you overcome the cravings.
Sugarless gum to keep your mouth busy?

    Don't give up the ship. Talking about it does help.
I found I cut myself some slack, kept exercising and I am starting to make some progress. Getting frustrated certainly hurt me than helped. Hang in there, I'm here for you! emoticon

    Menopause is no fun! I know I have been going through it for years, and the weight came back along with it. I am finally on the end of post menopause. You should go to a doctor and have your hormone levels checked and your thyroid levels. They can tell you if you are in the menopause state. I have had to add vitamins to my regimen and with my doctor we are trying to get me through all of the the natural way without hormone replacement therapy. Things like flaxseed, soy, vitamin D, magnesium, and melatonin. A good book to read on menopause "The Wisdom of Menopause" by Christiane Northrup, M.D. she is very thorough on the stages of menopause and the many things it does to our bodies. Keep moving forward, and take each day as a gift to make healthy, fit choices.

    First off, good job quitting smoking. That's a great accomplishment. Though it does a lot of weird things to the body, and reverses some weird things too. Smoking tends to dull taste and smell and when you stop smoking they come back different than they were before. Smoking also alters some body hormones and chemicals so your body has to relearn how to use them properly.

You've spent 2 years doing your best, so it may be time to get your doctor involved. S/he might have some ideas and may be able to point you towards new steps that will help. It's worth a try, right?

    Start by being kinder to yourself
It is such an accomplishment to quit smoking

celebrate that by remembering how you perservered....and
apply that perserverance to your nutrition...
eat something sweet ...make it fresh fruit
just change one little thing until the menopause thing
settles in.
I started that process early, it was scary no one really tells you what happens...except the hot flash thing...which I stil cant describe accurately.

Please dont give up!
