So I decided to cheat a little on trying to develop some muscle back after losing all the weight. I'm trying out creatine as a way to help develop my muscle strength a little quicker. First off, I have to buy some, which isn't particularly hard, its available everywhere. But I decide to buy from GNC, thinking it might be a higher quality of creatine than what you can get at Walmart. First thing I encounter is this young guy at the counter who starts asking me why a 4o year old like myself would buy creatine. He explained, very nicely and politely since he was speaking to his elder I assume, that normally only young guys buy the stuff and he's never sold it to anyone of my...er...generation... Nice. I bet the walmart greeter wouldn't have cared one bit why I was buying creatine.
Next thing is to actually start taking the stuff. The best way to take it is to start with a 'load' phase, which is basically 5 days of hell. You take 20 grams of the stuff a day for 5 days. Here's the reason for loading, creatine isn't readily absorbed into the body so you take a bunch at first to to kick start it. The problem is that a lot of it doesn't get absorbed and sort of sits in your guts. There, it does all sorts of really unnatural things that are not so pleasant. My family is ready for me to stop with the loading. Even the dog can't stand to be around me. I can't sleep, I feel sick to my stomach, its miserable. The last thing I want to do is work out. But, creatine doesn't do anything for you if you don't exercise while taking it, so time to hit the weights even if I'm a little concerned about what might happen when I lift something heavy.
I do notice a big jump in strength and energy from the stuff. I'm definitely able to lift more and do more reps and I noticed my bad shoulder doesn't seem to start hurting even though I've gone up a weight on the bench. So something is definitely going on.
Guess its time to actually post some pictures. Trying to find a decent 'pre' picture from last year.
