Short & Sweet Protein Frustration

I've always heard that North Americans eat too much protein. Now, why is it that I have such trouble getting mine? I'm not a vegetarian. If I eat nuts, my fat goes over. What is my problem? There isn't room in the freezer for a cow.

    it's an adjustment with a new style, I am still studying food labels, and some days I plan my whole day ahead just to meet certain requirements (such as protein, carbs, etc). I am struggling with a different food group: I have an oatmeal pretty much every day for breakfast (with cottage cheese or kefir, and blueberries and roasted flax seeds), and from the other two meals one with carbs and veggies, and the other with veggies only. for snacks I have a fruit or veggie, too. and with all this I struggle to meet my carb goal? ;) I try to go by how i feel at the end of the day as well, and take the recommendations of sparkpeople as guidelines only.

    I've been doing the Paleo diet, not watching my fat intake and I've lost 17.6 pounds so far. Unfortunately, Spark, as well as most food pyramid focused diets, does not look at or acknowledge the difference between good fats and bad fats. They think all fats are bad and that is just not true. I recommend looking into the Paleo diet and seeing if it is a fit for you.

    What DO you eat? That's where to start... A cow in your freezer would NOT be a good idea! Then your tryglicerides would go sky high! But everything is give and take... I eat a lot of chicken, an egg or two every now and then...(then my cholesterol goes OVER THE TOP!)... beans are good - but they're high in calories. There is no ONE PERFECT FOOD! (dammit) But... there IS one PERFECT drink!!!

    I'm not a vegetarian but I don't eat a lot of meat so I really rely on my beans! And thankfully, I love me some black beans!

    Greek yogurt & cottage cheese blended with protein powder (and whatever else you want to put in there) and make a protein smoothie to start your day, and you will be well on your way. Scrambled eggs are are great, too, and so is Kashi cereal. I think that is a big key which is why I repeat it so much on SP - get your protein in early, and often. Hope this helps.

    Yes, I've read that too. I also read that I need 1g.protein/lb body weight and I hardly ever make that goal- and I go over my fat allowance. It seems to be better to eat fish than beef (calorie are lower and protein is still high). Good luck :-)
