SCENIC FALL DRIVE

Monday, September 26, 2011

IT WAS GRAY AND CLOUDY YESTERDAY MORNING AND WE NEARLY CANCELLED OUR DRIVE. AFTER ALL WE HAVE DONE THIS DRIVE IN ALL SORTS OF BAD WEATHER AND TWO HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF GRAVEL ROAD IS NO FUN WHEN IT IS RAINING. BUT EVERYONE WAS SO DISAPPOINTED THAT TIM AND I RECONSIDERED.

BY 11:30 I HAD A PICNIC LUNCH PACKED AND OFF WE WENT. WE MET UP WITH MY MOM AND DAD, LOANED THEM ONE OF THE BOYS TO GIVE US MORE ROOM, AND HEADED OFF DOWN THE HIGHWAY.

OUR FIRST LEG OF THE JOURNEY IS A GRAVEL ROAD, BUILT FOR THE LOGGING AND OIL INDUSTRY. IT WINDS AND TWISTS, UP HILL AND DOWN INTO DEEP VALLEYS. THERE ARE NO TOWNS ON THIS STRETCH, NO VILLAGES, ONLY RIGS AND A BIT OF FRESHLY LOGGED LAND. THERE ARE A FEW AREAS WHERE THE OIL INDUSTRY HAS BUILT STUFF THAT THEY NEED (COMPRESSOR STATIONS, ETC.) THESE ARE THE ONLY THINGS THAT SPOIL AN OTHERWISE UNTOUCHED WILDERNESS.

WE STOP AT A SMALL LAKE CALLED ECONOMY LAKE SO THE BOYS CAN GET OUT AND MESS AROUND, WE LADIES NEED THE OUTHOUSE, AND SET OUT OUR PICNIC LUNCH.

IT IS FUNNY, I PACK ENOUGH FOOD TO FEED A SMALL ARMY AND SO DOES MY MOM. WE END UP WITH A LOT OF LEFTOVERS!!

BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN TO ENJOY THE ENDLESSLY BEAUTIFUL SCENERY. FOR THOSE OF YOU PRIVILEGED ENOUGH TO LIVE WHERE TREES TURN COLOUR; YOU WILL KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE TO DRIVE OVER HILLS AND THROUGH VALLEYS THAT ARE ALL THE SHADES FROM GREEN TO GOLD. HERE THERE ARE LOTS OF SPRUCE AND PINE THROWN IN FOR CONTRAST TOO. THE SUN CAME OUT AFTER AWHILE ADDING THE GLOWY ASPECT TO EVERYTHING.

WE STOP AT A FEW FAVORITE LOOKOUT POINTS, ONE A SHORT WALK THAT OVERLOOKS A VAST VALLEY, 5-10 MILES ACROSS. THE BOYS DISLODGE STONES AND ROLL THEM DOWN A STEEP CLIFF. I FIND AND PICK SOME SMALL HANDFULS OF WILD BLUEBERRIES. MY MOM DIGS OUT MORE FOOD FOR EVERYONE AND TIM AND MY DAD REFILL THEIR TRAVEL MUGS WITH COFFEE.

BY 4:30 WE HAVE TRAVERSED THE WHOLE 200KMS AND ARE ON A HIGHWAY AGAIN. WE STOP BRIEFLY IN THE MINING TOWN GRANDE CACHE. THIS LITTLE TOWN IS NESTLED IN THE FOOTHILLS ON THE EDGE OF JASPER NATIONAL PARK AND WHERE I WOULD LIKE TO MOVE WHEN WE RETIRE. WE HEAD UP HIGHWAY 40, AND IF IT IS POSSIBLE THE SCENERY IS EVEN MORE GORGEOUS AS WE FOLLOW A RIVER VALLEY QUITE A BIT OF THE WAY.

WE HIT GRANDE PRAIRIE BY 7:00, STOP AT A&W FOR A BITE TO EAT AND THEN HEAD ON HOME.

IT IS DARK WHEN WE GET HOME, THE CHORES STILL NEED TO BE DONE AND TIM NEEDS A NAP. THE DRIVE WAS SO MUCH FUN AND SHOULD BE BECAUSE IT IS THE LAST ONE WE WILL GO ON UNTIL NEXT SPRING.

Oh, some people still take Sunday rides!!! We did that growing up so also took our kids when they were little.
So glad you enjoyed the scenery, the picnic and the drive.
Here in NC trees are still green but in a few weeks we will see some color.
Thanks so much for sharing your "Scenic Ride".
