After two years of saying "I need to start running again" I decided to just sign up for a race and see what happened. And boy, did I choose a hilly race!
Last night my husband and I ran (well, I ran/walked) the Run DMU, the 4th annual 5k race sponsored by Des Moines University. The course was very pretty, but the South of Grand (avenue) neighborhood in Des Moines, where DMU is located, is known for its hills. And boy, did the race course deliver!
To be perfectly honest, the last time I ran more than a mile -- yes, one mile -- was just about two years ago. So I wasn't expecting to run the entire race, even if it was perfectly flat.
Also, my pre-race diet was pretty ridiculous, which may have caused me to *almost* throw up just past the finish line. Key word = almost.
I am super proud of my husband, though, who crossed the finish line just before me. But unlike me, he ran the entire course! Whew.
Despite my walking, poor diet, the hills and my complete lack of training, I managed to cross the finish line at 35:56. Not too shabby. My husband crossed in 35:35. Rockstar!
After the race my body was a bit of a mess; I've been sneezing ever since and last night my body temperature was all wonky. I climbed in bed at about 8:30 and stayed in bed for about 12 hours. But as of this morning, my muscles seem fine ...we'll see if that changes tonight.
Next up is the Hot Chocolate race on October 30. It's a 5K and a 5 mile race - this year I'll do the 5k, and maybe next year I'll do the 5 mile. And after that might be the Jingle Jam 5k in early December, which is also in a very hilly area... Whee!
