San Diego Blackout!

Friday, September 09, 2011

Well, yesterday was interesting! Around 3:40pm I walked in to the restroom at work and all of a sudden the lights went out and I was in pitch black. I walked out and saw that all the lights in the office were were our computers and phones. I left work at 3:50, 10 minutes before my regular time...and instead of my 12 minute commute home, it took 2 hours and 15 minutes!! Absolutely crazy! All the traffic lights were out so it took me more than an hour just to get through the first 2! Cell phones weren't really working either so Brian and I kept calling each other but it wouldn't go through. We were able to text and he was at home safe and sound. I got home at 6:05pm and relaxed for a bit, then went to our apartment gym for some upper body and then took a short had to be short because the darkness was coming fast and I didn't want to walk in the pitch black! Brian and I watched a couple shows on DVD on our laptop, I read a little with a flashlight, and then went to bed. Power was restored around 1am, thank goodness! Such a freak thing! It sounds like it was human error in Arizona that caused the whole issue. I'm so thankful it wasn't anything more serious than that. I feel bad for everyone who was at the airport or traveling by trolley, as both were shut down. I'm assuming some people must have got stuck in elevators too and I can't even imagine!

So, needless to say, I wasn't able to call Customer Service and get my rant on about our pictures! Just another day to stew! haha.

Before the blackout yesterday, I was a complete baked good carbaholic and I really need to nip this in the bud! We had baked goods on Tuesday and yesterday at the office and usually I don't have any but I had some on both days this week. Well, I'm just calling it an off few days and I'm getting right back to my regular eating habits today! No more baked goods!

Fellow San Diegans - what was your Blackout experience?

So happy it's Friday!

I couldn't believe that blackout thing! It took my father-in-law 2 hours to drive home 15 miles from work. Crazy! Sounds like you had a relatively painless experience though. I'm glad you didn't get stuck in an elevator!

It was a surreal day for sure. It was one day I am glad we live so close to a Highway off ramp, because we didn't have to deal with all that traffic from having no traffic lights. 2 hours is insane! My first thought was thank goodness my hubby had just gotten me gas the day before, because I'd hate to run out by sitting in traffic for hours to go nowhere! Glad you are safe. Glad it's over! We are on a boil water advisory, I saw La Jolla was too, are you part of that?

I heard all about it when it first happened on my way to an event in Pasadena yesterday evening and then on my drive home later at night it was of course the top story. When I got home and saw the traffic jams in Orange County on the news I could only imagine how bad it was in San Diego.

I found it interesting that they kept saying it isn't terrorism. That is sad that that is the first thing we have to think of now. Glad they were able to restore everything, this is a terrible time for many in Riverside/San Diego county to be without electricity with the heat.

At least it didn't last too long.
Some days the baked goods call is just too loud and insistent to resist. Over and done!!

Wow, that would be really freaky. I remember that happening to the east coast and lasting a few days. Sounds like it's all back to normal now. Have a great weekend!

This whole country has been strange lately. I'm on the east coast, and some people were without power for days when Irene brushed by.

It's amazing how much our lives depend on electricity.

It took me forever to get home, too! 2 hours?! I'm so sorry girl -- that's awful! I thought my hour, 15 minutes was bad enough!!

My boyfriend and I went for a long walk from PB to Mission Beach and up through La Jolla. We ended up coming back, lighting some candles so we could see around the kitchen, lighting the gas stove and cooking some omelets since we knew our cheese & eggs would most likely go bad!

It was really cool to walk outside and see everything black. The stars looked absolutely gorgeous!! Was kind of hoping it wouldn't come back on today so I'd get another 3 day weekend, but no such luck ;)

    Have a great weekend!!!

My DH was in Denver airport on his way to SD. They delayed the glights. Then he had to go to Ontario and drive down. Ha ha, serves him right for going without me!

Glad you are safe! My mom said it was crazy too. I talked to her this morning. They sat in the car listening to the radio to see what was going on. :o)
