Happy Labor Day to all. Since it's a holiday, I set no alarms today and I slept late. It felt good!
Today is for intervals and I do not have my normal routes (I'm still out of town) so I did my workout on the fly.
I'm probably spoiled in a way because there are really no loose dogs where I live. Most are either in a house or a yard and when they do come out, they're on a leash.
Not so out here. Country dogs tend to run wild for some reason. So it was today. I got challenged by a large bulldog and by another yippie-yap pipsqueak of a dog. The bulldog came out of a large Georgian house and made straight for the street where I happened to be running.
Let's face it, I can't outrun a bulldog. No way. So I stopped and so did the dog. It was like a stand-off for a few seconds. I started back on a walk and the dog came after me. I stopped again and folded my arms across my chest so as not to appear threatening. The dog stopped again, this time about three feet from me.
The owner was watching and of course was yelling at the dog. Perhaps because I was in a non-threatening position and was not moving, the dog finally responded to it's owner and went back in the yard, then I continued on my way.
The second dog was outside a house and responded to my movement since I was in a sprint at that time. He charged and ran after me as I was slowing back to a walk after one of the intervals. The dog caught up to me and came within a foot or so of my feet.
A teenager had been out in front, polishing his car, and ran up to us and grabbed the little dog... problem solved.
What am I, a dog magnet? I'm going to have to find my pepper spray and start carrying it, I suppose.
On the other hand, I had a running buddy for the first mile or so. We took turns passing each other until I went a different direction. Maybe that helped speed my time today because I seemed to be faster than normal. Although I didn't do a full five miles, the time for 4.35 miles was pretty good.
This was the interval day: run 1 minute/walk 2 minutes for 45 minutes, then run 30 seconds/walk 90 seconds.
