feet, Stephen King and the broken rule

Saturday, September 03, 2011

Last week I walked 13 miles in new shoes. As a result of them either being new or not correctly fitted, the end result was blisters on a good percentage of my feet and awkward and painful walking until Thursday. Mom, my biggest cheerleader, thought they would certainly be broken in for this weekend's walk.

I headed out really early this morning. The sun didn't even begin to peek its sleepy self up over the horizon until 5 miles in. I was so proud to be on schedule, wanting to be done and headed home just as the heat of the day was picking up. My feet were really struggling though.

I stopped at 5 miles, put moleskin on my feet, slathered them in petroleum jelly then started again. At 6 miles I put more moleskin on. At 7 miles I changed socks and debated continuing around the lake for 2.5 miles or taking the long route back. If I continued, I could be at my car in only a half hour. If I turned around I would have to walk the 7 before any relief. I turned around.

Are they supposed to be WALKING shoes? I always say when you get a new pair of shoes you have to break your feet in, but that's for heels - some shoes are NOT made for walking! Take 'em back - at least for a re-fitting. emoticon

You are amazing, your determination to be able to walk the 60 miles is outstanding. I think I would be taking the shoes back and asking for a second opinion on whether or not they are the correct fitting. emoticon emoticon

AArrrgh! I've never walked as LONG as you have, but even walking 1/2 mile with a blister or two is a real pain!!

You didn't describe your shoes so can't really advise you...but I thought that I had read that new shoes should be broken in gently? In any case, when I've had new shoes that gave me blisters and I had no choice but to wear them the next day - I just bandaged myself all over in the places where I might expect a blister (usually for me achilles heel, and the bottom of my heel, and maybe my toes - not too often!). The other things I do are cornstarch - just pure cornstarch - before I start, liberally in on around toes and feet and then put sock on. If the shoe is really new and I have older socks, I will generally wear two pairs of socks to help reduce the friction (they slide and forth on each other, and not my foot so much). Some will doubtless tell you to break down and buy these $50 high tech socks but I've never even put a pair on, let alone buy one. That might be a nice prize for goal weight when I'd feel like I was worth wearing $50 technical socks... or maybe ... I *should* invest NOW in a pair of $50 technical socks (but only if they are on sale like 50% off! heheh!).

In any case, I really feel for you!!

Ouch! Hope they heal up soon!!

Julia
