Adventures because of new TV regulations in Canada

Saturday, September 03, 2011

Canadian Sparkers will already know that the Canadian government and the CRTC has mandated that all TV is to be switched from analogue to HD broadcasting as of September 1, 2011. (Our friends to the south of us went through this a couple of years ago) Some areas did get an extension based on where they were located (remote) and difficulty in delivering those services.

I was getting regular cable with the cable company, plus telephone and internet from the phone company. Between the two of them, it cost over $140 a month. Well it is coming up on a year without work and I am having to find ways to save, I decided I had to make some changes.

A friend of mine did some research and found that the phone company was offering a bundle to new customers in which they offered a free rental of a PVR with the basic essentials package. The phone package that I had was an old program that was no longer offered, and by checking old bills, we discovered that I was not utilizing it to it's fullest anyway....

So my new package now includes a bundle of home phone, internet AND "Optic" TV for an intro price of less than half of what I was paying the two companies combined. This does not include any long distance charges but I calculated that the highest number of minutes as the new rate would still be less than $10 a month, so that is not a worry. And after the 6 months is up, it will still be LESS than what I was paying for internet and phone before - so I will basically be getting the TV service for free.

When this announcement was first made, I was quite upset. I figured that the government got enough of my hard-to-come-by money and did not need to tell me how to spend the little I had left. Apparently the equipment I already had (DVD with hard drive recorder) would not work once the "switch over" takes place. That means I would not be able to "time shift" to watch my favorite shows at a time more suitable to me....

But in this case, it actually turned out OK. Included with my new package is a PVR that allows me to record not just one show, but TWO shows at the same time, and still be able to watch a third if I so choose. WHOO HOO

I have to admit that computers can intimidate me, but I got the new TV service installed yesterday and have been having a ball learning what all my new toy is capable of doing. Yes, there is a learning curve, and some major differences, but I am having fun learning it all. The hardest thing to get used to is the remote which is laid out completely different than former remotes. As I have some visual problems, I usually use touch (and after many years of use was quite used to the other ones) so I am having to learn where the buttons are on this remote with some interesting results along the way. But it is early days yet, I am sure I will get used to it in time.....

Sounds like you got a good bargain. You will soon get used to it! Hope you don't have too much trouble finding the right buttons. Here in UK we went digital last year. We got Freeview as we used to have cable and it was too expensive to run! We miss having all the different channels and the American ones we used to get though! Enjoy your package deal! You deserve a good one! Hope you can find a job soon!

I know what your saying girlfriend! It seems like the Government is trying to tell us a lot these days where we can get our prescriptions, our insurance! The next thing will be what clothes we can wear and what house we can live in!
I am glad you got it worked out to where you could still bundle the items together for a pretty good price! Happy tv watching! emoticon emoticon
