Racing the Sunset...!

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

After being teased all day long by this wonderful autumn day and piles of paperwork standing between me and my cycling commute home at long last I'm OFF!

These days when I hop on my bike there is an increasing sense of urgency which borders on desperation: the cycling season will soon come to an end! The days are getting SO short, SO quickly!

Get out! Capture it! Keep those wheels spinning!

Today I not only raced the sunset but chased some hot air balloons on home! The winds tend to blow them up our valley more times than not. What a view as the sun neared the horizon, blue skies, wispy clouds and a pair of hot air balloons lazing their way up the valley...! Kept looking up and soaking up the's a wonder I didn't run off the road!

A colleague at work said she saw me cycling through her neighborhood yesterday on my way home...the long way of course...! She said: "Wow were you going FAST!" :-) To myself I'm thinking YES! The season is waning...gotta get ALL the cycling I can possibly get in! It was a nice compliment. I shared with her some of my recent journeys.

During today's ride I was reminded of an old Jerry Garcia song that fellow Sparker and cyclist SCOTTK3000 had as part of his signature here at SP a while back: The Wheel

Give a listen...has a bit of a country twang and whine with Garcia's trademark and most excellent steel guitar work...but also a bouncy, rhythmic beat and lyrics that stick to your brain and serve as metaphors for life, cycling and so much more! I had this album as vinyl way back in '72 or so...but I had never been into cycling then as I am now.

Fast forward to a recent visit to our local bike shop when my cycling buddy had a spoke repaired on her *WHEEL* and the fellow at the shop, Matt, gave an interesting little talk about the amazing bicycle wheel which is made up of parts which, on their own don't amount to much. You can crumple a bicycle spoke like a clothes hanger.

Yet somehow when properly constructed all those spokes, the rim, hub they all coalesce into a thing of great beauty, strength, utility and can carry us over HUNDREDS of thousands of miles!

Kind of like all of us here at SparkPeople and the supportive friends and family in our

Check out the lyrics:

The Wheel

The wheel is turning and you can't slow down,
You can't let go and you can't hold on,
You can't go back and you can't stand still,
If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will.

Won't you try just a little bit harder,
Couldn't you try just a little bit more?
Won't you try just a little bit harder,
Couldn't you try just a little bit more?

Round, round robin run round, got to get back to where you belong,
Little bit harder, just a little bit more,
A little bit further than you gone before.

Small wheel turn by the fire and rod,
Big wheel turn by the grace of God,
Every time that wheel turn 'round,
Bound to cover just a little more ground.

Won't you try just a little bit harder,
Couldn't you try just a little bit more?
Won't you try just a little bit harder,
Couldn't you try just a little bit more?

Keep on Sparkin' everyone...a little bit harder and a little bit more!

Ah yes, the days are getting shorter & the trees are even beginning to turn already . . . at least there's the raking & shoveling workouts in our future!

What a great blog! I am not an avid cycler, but I have taken a few 20 mile rides in my community. Where I live it is very bike friendly. Your blogs inspire me to dust off my bike and take a ride sometime.

And your metaphor about the spoke is so true. It is the support and stability of the group that makes us strong!
