Cleaning out and Organizing my closet - any tips?

Thursday, August 11, 2011

I am cleaning out and organizing my closet this afternoon! I'm getting rid of worn-out and ill-fitting clothing, plus setting up the closet so I can easily find things. Any suggestions for closet organization would be really useful!

A more substantive post about how I felt going through the clothes and just general progress updates will follow this evening, but I wanted to solicit help early on!

Take on one shelf or section at a time! (That's what my wife tells me! :) ) Get all the clothes you won't wear anymore out first. That will filter good. Our walk in closets are both California Closet fitted. It organizes and is extremely functional with little extras like hang poles. Check it out on line.

How I like to do it:
    - separate clothes into function, such as work clothes & fun clothes. Then, separate by sleeve length & color.
    - I'll have a row of tanks, a row of cutie shirts, a row of long-short sleeve shirts (like sport shirts), a row of shurgs, a row of button down, a row of club/go-out clothes, etc etc.

I had a friend tell me that each time she wore something, she would turn the hanger the opposite way so that she knew what she's worn and what she hasn't. At the end of the season, she would donate all of the clothes that she hadn't worn in order to ensure that she didn't keep clothes in her closet. I've always like that idea as well.

My favorite site for clothing care & organization (used by stylists & wardrobe people, but anyone can buy from here--really good prices):
