Runners with foot issues HELP

I was rx with plantar fasciitis over a year ago. I have being really well (KNOCKING ON WOOD) since my 2nd cortozone shot. I even found shoes I love NB 506. My new issue is I have not worn my orthodics for almost a week. My arch hurts and the heal hurts once my shoe comes off at night. I mean at 6:30AM this morning I was putting my new shoes for comfort.

Do orthodics last past a year of endless wear? Even with good running and stability shoes do you still find you need your inserts?

I really want to run and well today is suppose to be D1 of W2 and I am giving myself a 2nd day of rest and just run tomorrow. I know running is not off limites unless you have really serious plantar fasciitis. I am not to the point of serious. I do know (and I think I found one of my issues) I have been a little lazy with the stretching after a run.

    There was something in RW last month about rolling your foot on a frozen golf ball at night that is supposed to help.

    I don't know the answer. Hope you get some expert advice -- a doctor or great running shoe store like FitNiche is a good source. Another source that might be more convenient and free is Lakeland Runner's Club. (Google: Lakeland Runners Club) I bet you could e-mail your question and get a good answer.

I wear orthotics in my running shoes. I'm swapping two pairs back and forth and have them in both pair. I'll ask about reusing a set when I buy my third pair. I have wondered if I should not be wearing orthotics in my other shoes. They feel so good in the running shoes. I have very high arches.

    These ladies have already said exactly what I would say ... Best to check with your dr or the shoe store to see what they recommend. Don't lose hope and remember that getting it all right in the beginning will help you be able to progress faster, achieve more and be healthier! Take the time to make sure it's all good before pushing on! There is no shame in making sure you have the right tools for the battle you are fighting! Keep your chin up!

    I have orthothics for flat feet. I know that if I exercise without them EVER I risk getting a stress fracture. The stress fracture is what landed me in the doctor's office to begin with. So in answer to your question, no you can't run without your orthotics because you will hurt yourself. I'm not a runner (I'm a walker) but I did workout without them and broke the side of my heel. Also, cooling down and stretching after your run is absolutely necessary to prevent injury. I didn't do that properly either and irritated my achilles tendon.

    Thanks the inserts are in and my foot is already feeling better. I will still hold of and make this my 2nd of no running and really do my yoga. I think I will melt this morning and then do my other dvd 10min. Solution yoga for the stretch part.

    I'm not a runner- but have/had custom orthothics for ankle problems and because I'm flat footed. My ortho dr said depending how active you are they can last a few months or longer- when you start to see them lose their shape, feel the wear/see the wear or the pain comes back it's time for a new pair.
I haven't worn mine in awhile because I haven't been walking like I used to when Andrew was in a stroller and we walked everywhere.
I had 1 cortisone shot awhile ago ang and hopefully will not need another one.
My inserts lasted about 6 months w/ lots of use.
I know it stinks they wear out so fast because they are expensive- i think the last ones were around $100.
Check w/ your dr and see what he thinks- but mine said probably 4-7 months depending on use- but everyone is different.

    I don't have experience with this but I would think you still need to wear the orthotics even with good shoes, especially if they are custom. What did NB say? Did you go to the NB store?

    Orthotics can last a long time. My foot doc always examines mine and sometimes I go a couple years between visits and they're fine. I got a case of PF this spring when I was wearing "stability" running shoes instead of my orthotics inside neutral shoes. I've switched back and it is getting better. You really need to do the stretches though - both stretches for the runs, and stretches for the PF. Also, I wasn't getting better like I'm used to from just stretching and switching back to orthotics, so I got a night splint and it has made a big difference. The PF is almost gone after wearing the splint when I sleep for the last three weeks.
