Can't Afford to Eat Out?

Saturday, July 30, 2011

I heard from another sparkie celebrating her Anniversary that this is the first Anniversary she and DH couldn't afford to eat out.

It was an AHA! moment for me.

Many years we really couldn't afford to eat out so we celebrated at KFC or even McDonald's.

Since starting my Spark Program I still cannot afford to eat out - but now it is health, not money keeping me home! AHA! I can't afford to eat what I can afford to buy!

So now we really celebrate not only our anniversaries but our good health!!

Spark On!

Yeah, eating out causes weight gain. Even carefully ordering and asking lots of questions does not control what they do in the kitchen. For example yesterday I ordered whitefish almondine, it came with sauce over the almonds and the whitefish was floured and pan fried. I am up a pound today. Also came with yellow rice, now what did they put in the rice? Don't usually eat bread at home but they had homemade rolls, ate 2, very good. Aslked for the veg medly steamed came with carrots and squashes...only ate the carrots did not want gas. At least had water. It was good, I was starved but there is a one pound gain today.

Our last trip to a Chinese resulted in stomach cramps. Too much fat, MSG we hadn't had in almost a year. My DH, who isn't the healthiest eater, decided that this would not be repeated. I almost LOL. When he decided that something is healthy, it is a HUGE event.

We slipped up last time we went out to eat and ended in a Chinese restaurant because it was Friday and we had no reservations and showed up too late to get immediate service. And, boy! that Chinese sure shows up in the wrong places!!

We can afford it, but just don't bother going out much anymore. We miss the excellent restaurants in Vancouver, B.C.

We prefer to eat in now and just spurge on a steak or lobster or shrimp for celebrations.

Something I've thought about many times. We still eat out and regretfully it is usually not too healthy. But there was a time when we ate out every Saturday night whether we could afford to or not. I can't tell you how many meals we ate at Friday's, Chili's or Applebees! Friday's used to have a reward program, and a few times the waiters commented on how they had never seen anyone with as many points (actually we were saving them for the big prize, a cruise or round trip tickets, but the program was discontinued. I got $150 in gift cards to Kohls when that happened - not a bad reward). In the last few years we have really cut down our eating out, and when we do, we tend to go to locally owned places. I don't think they sabotage the food as badly. I recently ate at Friday's with my son because we were alone that night and had a good coupon. I made a wise choice and had a nice meal. But it was the first time I had been there in two years.
