One year ago today I found SparkPeople. Thanks to inspiration from my brother, my sister, and my brother-in-law, I searched for an easy app on our smart phone. SparkPeople's was it.
First I thought, I'll just track what I'm doing, and see. I won't necessarily make any changes.
After one day tracking I could see that I was eating way too much fat, sodium, calories. I learned so much from weighing and measuring. I learned I had no idea what a serving size was.
And I learned to look for food that I liked, not that I was "supposed" to eat, because it was healthy. Sure, I eat spinach and flaxseed now, but I do because I like them. Because I feel so much better throughout the day when I have food that gives me real nutrition.
I learned to look at my feelings, instead of stuff them. That wasn't pleasant. But it has been very rewarding.
I learned as I got thinner and more athletic, that it is good to just be me. I can be the very best Me there is. I don't have to be someone else who is thinner, more athletic. Someone in a magazine, or a stranger on the street.
I learned that I do notice other people's weight. I can't help it. But mostly now, I think, "maybe they are with SparkPeople too..."
I haven't posted blogs in a long time, but I am on the site every day, learning and tracking.
I've lost 32 pounds from a year ago and I'm 3 pounds away from goal. The last time I was this weight was in 1985. And I have never been fitter, even when I ran track in high school.
My two most challenging situations are traveling away from home, and eating with a group of friends. I still have much to learn, and much to practice.
Thank you, SparkPeople, for this site, and for the energy and enthusiasm you bring to the world. You are truly changing our lives for the better.
