Look at the casual eating we've done in the past....

Friday, July 22, 2011

Denny’s Fried Cheese Melt 1,260

The Cheesecake Factory Farmhouse Cheeseburger 1,530 (1,900 with fries)

IHOP Bacon ’N Beef Cheeseburger 1,250 (plus 620 for onion rings)

Cold Stone Creamery PB&C Shake 2,010

Applebee’s Provolone-Stuffed Meatballs With Fettuccine 1,520

The Cheesecake Factory Ultimate Red Velvet Cake Cheesecake 1,540

The Steakhouse (Morton’s) Porterhouse Steak and mash 1,390 for the steak; 850 for the mash

Great Steak extra large King Fries 1,500

I have to say.... none of these were on my list of things to eat; my weakness was mostly homemade goodies. When I found out my (favorite with the family) apple dumplings were 1640 calories each, I quit making them. WOW!!!! No wonder we felt stuffed after eating them.

I'm highly resistant to watching everything that goes into my mouth. I really do think it's better to not constantly be worried about what we eat. My goal for myself is to get the focus off of food and onto enjoyable activities and building constant growth (except in size! Ha!) into my life. However, because my husband and myself grew up in families where the focus was on food, we have many learned habits for which to provide healthier substitutes. Both our families were farmers, and relatively poor, so their focus on food was for entirely different reasons, and had different consequences, than are ours. They ate "three squares" a day, and didn't worry about occasional sweets, which were (at least in my family) always homemade.

Eek! I am trying really hard to "keep the focus off food", and this is a real eye-opener -- who would have thought those items would have so many calories. I am in Durango, CO for a few weeks, and it is easier to keep my mind off food when I am not home near my refrigerator and pantry. It is, however, tempting to eat out. It's always something! :)

Is it wrong that your blog made me hungry? Just kidding (mostly), but I know what you mean...I am constantly appalled at the amount of calories in former favorites...number 1 being the Oriental Chicken Salad at Applebee's...healthy because it's a salad, right? I was wrong...over 1,000 calories...in a salad!!! I could have had cheesecake!! :)

It is quite amazing how many calories some meals have. I used to eat a lot of Marie Callendar's chicken pot pies, the large ones, and when I was going to WW years ago I tried to figure out how many points one was and couldn't do it. My WW cardboard calculator wouldn't go anywhere near that high. All for some good tastes in our mouth for a little while, a very little while. I keep reminding myself of that. Oh, and for the mind-numbing effects, too! I bet your apple dumpings were delicious!
