My Upcoming Vacation Vent - people need to leave me alone

Monday, July 11, 2011

I'm going on vacation the end of August to OBX aka the Outer Banks in North Carolina. I'm super excited since it'll be my first time going and I can't wait to spend an entire week in a mansion on the beach with some pretty amazing people.

With that being said I do have some issues with how people have responded to my decision to not take part in all the meals that will be prepared for us. Everyone in the group (around 30 people) will be divided into making either one breakfast or one dinner for everybody. Now that means that it's up to the group preparing the meal to choose what they want to serve to everyone. So basically unless you make a choice not to, you're going to eat the breakfast and dinner that's prepared. Well I've already decided that I plan on making on my own food throughout the week and not to partake of the group meals but of course still eat with everyone. That has seemed to cause some people to question me and my food decision. Some of the vacationers are saying that I've worked so hard so I should enjoy myself that week and just eat whatever I want and just go back to my, now normal, eating habits when I get back. They feel that because it's a vacation I'm being ridiculous with making the choice of wanting to buy my own food when I get there and mostly eating only that. A friend of mine thinks that I should have a little of everything in moderation and just make sure I have a salad with my meals.

I personally feel that EVERYONE needs to mind their own business and let me do what's best for me. One girl was right, I did work hard to get to this point but my reward will not be in the form of food, it will be that new super cute bathing suit or dress or shorts that I was not able to wear before losing this weight. I refused to reward myself by eating whatever I feel for an entire week of vacation, that's just not what I want to do.
***If this something that you like to do, then by all means do what's best for you. I can only state what best for me and my body and the things that I feel comfortable doing.***
Eating whatever I wanted is what got me to 229 pounds, I'm not doing that again. This life that I'm living now is my permanent lifestyle, it's one that I plan to live regardless of where I am or what I'm doing. I like how things are for me right now and I'm sick of having to explain that to others. It's actually quite ironic that they people telling me to eat whatever I want and enjoy myself are either trying to lose a couple of pounds before they get there or lost some weight and gained it back! The bottom line is that I don't walk around telling people to put food down and work out more so I do not appreciate them telling me what to do. My ultimate goal to go on vacation being in the 140's and leaving in the 140's so if that means I don't participate in the 'group' meals then so be it. I want my happiness to be from having fun and feeling comfortable with my body and in my skin and that's something that food just cannot do for me.

Good for you! So many people think that this lifestyle is a "diet" and that's why 95 percent of people end up gaining it all back. I've had family members get upset with me because I have my one serving of dinner at holidays and I wont take seconds or thirds unless it's a plain green vegetable. I've had family and friends make comments when I dont eat an appetizer when everyone goes out, therefore wont pay for part of it. You are taking care of YOU and if they can't understand that, then so be it. They'll see it's NOT a huge deal when the time actually comes. I'm glad you are sticking to your guns!

You got it right; you've come too far from where you started from. No one told you the road was going to be easy and it appear you have no intention of turning back. Just continue doing it your way and stay focus. The best is yet to come.

Hey I think everyone should do what is best for them. It takes a lot of courage to stick up for what is right for you. You prob got the same flack from people when you made the personal choice to serve Jehovah , God. I say stick to your choice and do what is best for you. And bravo bravo for coming this far. And still working to reach your personal goals.
As you continue to be on this journey called life you will also realize that not everyone really care what you do they just NEED something to be critical about. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I agree that food is not a reward. It's your decision how and what you will eat and no one else's. Unfortunately, you will always have to put up with and deal with comments from other people. Try not to let it get to you but make it clear that again, it is your decision and that people should respect that decision and not hassle you about it.

Anyway, have a great time. Sounds like it will be wonderful!

You need to do what's best for you! And everyone is entitled to their opinion....but NOT entitled to tell you what you should do! Whatever makes you comfortable...& that you can live with is EXACTLY what you should do! No one has the right to determine what you will & won't eat! For goodness sakes!

Go, have fun.....& relax! EnJOY your vacation YOUR way! You're most deserving! Have a GREAT time!

People are so used to using food as a reward that it freaks them out when other people don't do it. Plus, people are used to showing hospitality in the form of food. So both of those factors are probably making them prod you. They won't get your reasoning no matter how you explain it, I bet.

I applaud your conviction and I know you will succeed!

Stick to your decision, don't let anyone pressure you. And I don't understand why anyone would anyhow. State your decision and let it go at that. You don't always have to be explaining.

Have a great time and d on't let anyone or anything ruin your vacation.

You can say it is a food allergy. If pressed, respond that you are allergic to FAT. It is not a lie...our lives depend on how we take care of ourselves and being fat is a killer. Treva is mostly right...if you had a serious well known illness like diabetes or something, most people would back off...but there are always those that want to "cure" you with their helpful suggestions too.

Stay true to yourself and don't let all those friends and family helpers/advisors ruin your vacation. You are there for R & R...not eat 'n' eat! emoticon So proud of you with your success AND your determination.

I REALLY like Trev's comment about if you were a diabetic, they wouldn't pressure you. Try that reasoning with them.
Good for you for reaching such an awesome goal! 140!!! That's an accomplishment worth celebrating.

Congrats on your fantastic hard work! Stick with YOUR plan and let us know how it goes.

good for you, you are right, it's a lifestyle, so if u don't feel comfortable with eating whatever they are going to cook an bringing your own food I don't know why they have a problem with that. keeps strong and have fun out there.

Good for you. Don't worry about what the others think. If you were diabetic or something that had restrictions they wouldn't question it. There is nothing with choosing to eat what you know is healthy for you.

Good for you for planning out your own vacation and letting them know what works for you. I'd anticipate more of their same behavior/attitude while there. Good for you for also stating what your boundaries are and making them clear prior to actually being on vacation.

Enjoy the vacation on your terms girl. And, always remember ... they are great people and to have fun.

Live your life on your terms!

You are 100% right to do what you want. I've just started with changing my habits, and rather then encourage, I've had a few friends balk at the fact that I have brought my own foods to a few bbq's (yes, I'd like that FOUR oz piece of steak plain - no sauce, no rub, no marinade, no seasoning! And yes, its 4oz, not 9oz). You gotta do whats right for you.

Enjoy your vacation - you know most of 'em will probably be jealous of your meals anyway!

You have to make your own decisions and it sounds like this is the right one for you. I once told a food pressuring friend. 'food was like a drug to me and I couldn't fall off the wagon or I would eat everything in sight. Please don't temp me anymore than I already am.'

Good luck and enjoy the vacation!!!!!!!!!!
