My husband Ron and I enjoyed a great hike today up in Rocky Mountain National Park. I love that within an hour from our home we can be in a different world and feel like we are on a mini-vacation. We are blessed to live in Colorado and that we have the health and desire to enjoy what we have!
We decided to tackle "Estes Cone" around 11,000 feet in elevation. The trailhead starts at the Longs Peak trail, which is a popular 14,000 ' mountain. My DH has climbed it a few times, but it's something I haven't tackled.
We started early to beat the heat and the afternoon rainstorms that are dangerous to be in, especially in higher altitude.
Hiking is an equal opportunity community event. People are so friendly and it's fun to talk to folks on the trail. If there was ever an emergency, fellow hikers would be there to help.
This trail is a 6 mile roundtrip with amazing elevation gain. Although I do cardio during the week, hiking uphill always taxes my lungs. My DH is not an intentional exerciser, but he is in better shape than I am with his heart/lungs! Go figure. Scrambling up on the rocks at the end was fun and the view from the top stunning!
We enjoyed our lunch at the top, then hoofed it down. A great day to spend with my husband and to celebrate our amazing state of Colorado!
