Variety is Helping

I've had a good variety of workouts this week, and I think it's been a good thing for my body. Since starting back on SP almost two weeks ago, I've been getting in 3 or more interval-style 3-mile walk/runs each week. I've also started doing water aerobics, which is a nice antidote to the heavy pounding on the joints that the jogging does (though I still find other spots that start aching after a session in the water!).
Yesterday I also worked out with my trainer, who is always changing up my exercise. He had a fun one yesterday that anyone could try: Take a pack of playing cards, with 2 jokers included. Shuffle well. Then draw a card, and do an exercise based on the suit of the card, for as many reps as the value of the card (face cards = 10, Aces = 15). Depending on where you are working out, you can change this up to suit what you're doing. Here's what he had me do:
Clubs = Pullups
Hearts = Pushups
Diamonds = Squats
Spades = Sit-ups
Joker = 500 meters on the rowing machine
I went through about 2/3 of the deck in about 40 minutes, and got a really good workout. The fun of picking a card and wondering what I would have to do next made it interesting. This is something you can do at home, the gym, or just about anywhere. Insert whatever exercises fit your needs. Just think, if you went through the whole pack of cards, you would have done 99 of each exercise, plus 1000 meters on the rowing machine!
I'm heading to Ohio to see family next week, so I might just take this idea with me, to make sure I get a few good workouts while I'm there.
Happy Independence Day, everyone!
