Responding to - What makes you happy?

Friday, July 01, 2011

There a few ways to look at this question, all important. What puts bounce in your step; what gives you deep satisfaction; what eliminates the negative feelings, any anxiety? I help lead music in church which is a fantastic high for me. However, getting high is not the same as becoming a mature grown up, what some of us would call growing in wisdom and holiness. The feeling of accomplishment from achieving little goals for better health puts bounce in my steps. The physical high after exercise - love those endorphins - and feeling rested puts bounce in my step for sure. Like you folks, just thinking about or observing my kids or my new granddaughter certainly gives me deep satisfaction. If you don't smell the roses along the way, you're wasting this life. It is not only meant for high purpose. If you're not enjoying life, you're doing it wrong. I had been doing it wrong for a few decades, but the past few years I've smartened up. With the help of a lot of good people (in my book, angels that God has sent me) I won't get lost in that type of nonsense again. If terrible things happen, I'll grieve, and then pick up and go on enjoying. Thanks for this question. Anyone who visits this thread would be smart to answer it for his/her self.

One of my mantras is "worry is ingratitude beforehand." It might be cliche, but it helps me remember that anything that we let pre-emptively take our joy from us is not helping us show our gratitude for this life and what it offers.

I'm happiest when I remember to be grateful for the amazing life that I have (which, of course, I don't always remember to do). Thanks for the pick-me-up!
