This past Sunday my sister and I headed out to Stanley Park in Vancouver to participate in the ScotiaBank Half-Marathon and 5K. We were signed up to do the 5K, no where near ready for a half marathon but maybe, maybe one day, maybe!! The day was lovely, not rainy, not to hot. The course was beautiful!! It is always fun to run when there is something new and beautiful to look at!! My sister had not been training much but she kept up with me for the first half of the run and then told me to keep going, so I did. I will admit to taking a couple short walk breaks, especially up the hill just after the 4 K mark! Race organizers should know to put the hills at the beginning of the race, not close to the end!!! Anyway, the last stretch we merged with the half marathoners and there were a lot of people lining the streets and cheering everyone on! It was very cool and motivating, even though I had no one there cheering specifically for me, people cheered any way. We all had our names on our bibs so my sister actually had someone cheer for her by name, which took her by surprise. The coolest thing was lots of the half marathoners who were finished stayed along the end of the course to stretch etc and cheer everyone else on, I thought that was very encouraging! Any way, long story short, I finished in 40 minutes 28 seconds, just shy of my 40 minute goal! If I had just skipped one walk break I could have made it but next time I will do it! Next race is in October so lots of time to improve my time!! All in all a great day and a great first 5K run!
