Kicking the Diet Habit

Thursday, June 23, 2011

I took a SparkPeople poll this morning...
Am I in:
Diet mode- quick fix
Making long term changes for a healthy lifestyle
Focusing on healthy living

The above is my paraphrase of the poll, but you get the idea. I selected the middle, making long term changes...and it was a wake up call.

I have been focusing on losing the weight! Making choices to get the lbs off, NOT establishing this is the rest of my life habits.

In a corner of my mind was the thought I'd had before, so many times before when I'd lose weight...that once the weight is off - THEN I'd _______.

The truth is, that kind of thinking is a set up for failure. Failure because unless healthy living is a daily choice, a for the rest of my life, one day at a time, one food choice at a time, one exercise set at a time, no matter how much weight I lose, I WILL gain it back. I will gain it back because I will fall back into old patterns of behavior...eating for emotions, not exercising, not planning and preparing to have healthy food choices on hand.

I've had the same issue with saving $ in the past. We'd save once we had enough $ each month to set aside. The reality is, unless you begin saving today, there is never enough $ to set aside someday. Some excuse, some situation always pops up.

This truth is the Nike ad/mantra "Just Do It" - for some reason, maybe my 3rd week of the 5k Boot Camp? and into my 3rd week of SparkPeople- I finally get "It"!

It is hard to make that switch from "I am on a diet" to I am learning how to eat and exercise for a healthy life! I am still working on that but making many changes along the way. It is still a struggle but I am making progress.

As for money, I have had the same $ issues and a year ago I just started having a set amount automatically transferred into a savings account each month. When we needed a new washer I had money set aside that enabled me to pay for it without having to use a credit card. That was great! It is not easy but I treat it like another bill that I have to pay. I am paying myself.
