When I was in my early 20's my mother warned me about my weight (after my first child) noting that I could have diabetes. I was so frustrated at her for that...I thought she was wishing that bad luck on me (I know crazy thinking right). Well, what my mother failed to tell me was that I predisposed to diabetes because we have a family history of diabetes on both my mother and father's side of the family. Additionally, she didn't tell me that weight gain is a usual trigger for diabetes. Fast forward 15 years and here I am with diabetes (brought on by weight gain). Another think I didn't find out until recently is that congestive heart failure is a problem in my family as well. I wondered why I have so much water retention. If I don't take my medicine, I can gain up to eight pounds of water weight. That is where I am today.
It is very discouraging to battle multiple genetic conditions that not only can be life threatening, but wreak havoc on your mental state. It can cause depression at times. I have to work really hard physically, mentally and emotionally to stay positive. Spark People really helps me with this battle. I love reading the blog posts and the tracking charts help me see my progress and keeps my goals at the forefront of my mind.
Onward and Upward!
