Shipshewana 2011

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

Monday evening I picked Tuffybird up at the airport and we headed to Shipshewana, IN to meet up with some other great spark friends. We had a 3 1/2 hour drive so it gave us lots of time to get acquainted. Since we have "talked" to each other for over a year on SP, conversation came easily and the time flew by. Before you knew it, we reached our hotel where Sharonsparkle, Lilygal and MSWeezer were waiting for us. We visited in Weezie's room for a short time and called it a night, planning to rise at 6:30 am for an early morning walk.

We met in the hallway Tuesday morning for a brisk, early morning walk only to find Lily was going to have to walk in flip flops. I'll let her tell you that story. So we had a "semi" brisk early morning walk since flip flops generally are not as easy to walk in as athletic shoes.

After the walk, showers, and breakfast we headed to the shops in Shipshewana. We were the first ones through the doors at Lolly's at 9 am.

All of us bought something at the shops with most of us bringing home a project or two to work on. It was alot of fun to shop with the gals--we laughed and laughed as we explored all the shops around Lolly's. My highlight was trying the "barefoot" shoes. What I discovered is I cannot wear them because my second toe is longer than my first toe. They are designed for what I guess are "normal toes." But I did discover there is a new "barefoot" shoe by Merrell called a Pacer Glove. It, too, is a "barefoot" shoe without the toe "fingers". It looks like a regular shoe only it allows your toes to splay as if you are barefoot. I did not purchase the shoes there but am going to get them in my area (just in case I want to return them.) It's hard to know if you really love a shoe in 5-10 minutes of wearing it in the store. I want to be able to try them on my carpet in my home for an hour or two and have the option of returning them if I decide they are not for me. But I'm looking forward to giving them a try.

After lunch, we headed to the ever popular Shipshewana Flea Market. It was a perfect day weather wise, 70's with a nice breeze. We had a blast looking at all the stuff that people sell at flea markets. We made a few small purchases then came to the booth which turned out to be the highlight of the day--a wig booth. Now these were not the wigs from the 60's and 70's, these were beautiful wigs with modern hair styles. Tuffy and I were interested and after looking at a few, decided we wanted to see what we'd look like with different styles. Weezie, Lily and Sharon joined us and offered compliments and opinions. Even though they gave me some kind compliments on one, I quickly gave up the seat to Tuffy. Wow, you should have seen how a couple of the styles enhanced her beauty. It was so fun, and all our comments and compliments to her began attracting more people standing around and watching. By the time we were done, Tuffy had a totally new look. I am sure she will share her story, but here is her new picture:

How can you top wig shopping? Since we were starting to get a little too much sun and beginning to feel weary, we stopped to eat dinner at the first restaurant we came to. It turned out to be quite good (and we were pretty hungry!) All of us but TB had an Amish piece of pie--no calories of course!

Weezie, Lily and I walked back to the hotel (a mile or so) and Sharon and TB drove the car and treasures back. We met in the lobby and once we sat down, it was all over for the day. We took a few pictures and called it a night before it was dark!

Weezie and I got up early on Wednesday for a quick 2 mile walk and after breakfast we made one last trip to Lolly's and the flea market. It began to rain just as we found what we were looking for at the flea market--flip flops that you can change out the straps. By 11 it was time to pack up and say goodbye.

We had a great time visiting, shopping, eating, and laughing together. I'd love to be able to do it again--maybe next year--with even more spark friends!

Here are Sharon and Weezie in Sharon's really cool Mustang!

I had a wonderful time in Shipsee! It was so nice to meet everyone "in person" although I felt like I knew you all already. I can't remember the last time I laughed so much and shopping "with the girls" was a hoot, although I think you guys were a bad influence on me emoticon emoticon

I'm glad we all agreed to share pictures (I'll post mine and a blog when my head is a bit more clear) because that way we should have a nice selection.

I particularly like the one you took of me in my wig. I think I'll use it as my new profile pic. We did attract quite a crowd of spectators, didn't we? I thought it was particularly funny when the one lady chimed in with her opinions emoticon

I can't say this often enough ... thank you so much for making the trip feasible for me.

emoticon

Jane - you sure captured the fun of our mini little Spark Rally! Loved your blog and the pictures are good. Except why do I look so crappy in the pics while everyone else looks great?
It sure was fun and we are already planning to do it again so that means it was a success.

Great job Jane and thanks for sharing. It was such fun and thanks for helping TB make this trip a reality. She is a beautiful little (and I mean little) lady. I too hope we can manage again next year and add a few new faces to the mix. It is like having 'sisters'. Glad you had a safe trip home and will be good to hear that TB makes it home and Bob's reaction to the 'new' look.
