AZ Road Runners Summer Series #2 5K

Monday, June 13, 2011

I did the second of five races in the series yesterday. It was already pretty warm by the time the run started at 6:30 AM. They had it in a different part of the park this year, but the route was still all on dirt trails. The route was a 'lollipop' - out along the stick, around the sucker (how appropriate some might think that is), and back in along the stick. I started a little slowly as I was feeling a bit tight. I settled into a 5 minute running one minute walking routine, and started to feel better. The first mile went in 10:17. The second mile felt better and I was able to pick up the pace a little, and got that one in about 9:39 or so. In the final mile I could feel myself starting to poop out, but I tried to keep pushing. The last 1.1 mile went in 11:03. With the fractions added in, I finished the race in 31:00.19. I was quite happy with this, since the one I did a couple weeks ago I ran 32:20. A definite improvement, but still a ways to go to get under 30 minutes, which is my goal for this year.

I have also signed up for some more sprint triathlons, the first of which is in early July, so I need to get back into a more balanced training program again.

Today was a 32 mile bike ride. I was able to get out and do this distance since I am off work this week. I hope to get some extra time in the pool this week, too.

I hope everyone is off to a great start to your week!

Enjoy your week off work and the chance to get in some extra fitness and come up with your program to prepare for the sprint tris. I saw that 32 mile bike ride and couldn't imagine it untill I realize that you are off this week. Since I just started riding and the bike isn't really built for speed, I think I'm dong good to get in more that 6 miles at a time. It's all about the progress though. Keep raising that are such a huge motivation to me to keep on trying new things and going even a little further and farther! Thanks for leading the way!!!

Good job on improving your 5k time. I am interested in reading about your tri training. My goal is to do a sprint triathlon but I am not there yet.
