I wanted to share an e-mail I received that I'm feeling very good about! The Alliance for a Healthier Minnesota paired with The Biggest Loser to sponsor a weight loss challenge from January 15 - April 15.

7.How did your team come together? We were watching the 1st episode of Biggest Loser January 4th 2011. (BL happens to be our favorite show to watch together.) An ad came on for the Biggest Loser Minnesota Challenge which sent both Steve and I grabbing for our lap tops to look closer at what they were talking about. I was ready to jump on board immediately. Steve told me to go ahead and do it on my own. I wanted to do it together, so during the show I kept after him. Finally I said "what would Jillian say" That's all it took. By the end of the show we had created our team Excess Baggage. How do you know one another? We are husband and wife.
8.Why did you decide to compete in the Biggest Loser Minnesota Challenge? Laurie: Hearing the ad during the 1st episode just flipped a switch for me. Also, a chance to go to the BL Live Finale was an opportunity I didn't want to pass by without trying. Steve: To become healthier and also my wife was in my face very much like I think Jillian would have been.
9.What motivated you to continue towards your goal? Laurie: I like how I feel. I like talking with family, friends and work mates about eating healthier. Steve keeps me motivated. I would have been at a jumping off place in April if Steve hadn't been their doing this with me. It has been fantastic going through this process with my husband!! Steve: Because I feel better.
10.Did you and your teammates do anything to help keep one another motivated? We have gone to the grocery store several times together...fun!! We have tried several new recipes, very healthy. When it comes to our workouts, we don't tell each other we "have to do it" but we just ask each other what we are doing today for exercise.
11.What was the hardest part about losing the weight (if applicable)? Laurie: Staying motivated when my weight wasn't dropping off like I wanted it to. Steve: Changing eating habits.
12.Do you have a favorite exercise? Laurie: I am learning how to run. It's not my favorite, yet but it is something I'm proud of. I want to run a 5K before the end of summer. Steve: Treadmill.
13.Do you have a favorite healthy meal or snack? Laurie: Two recipes I found. Both very healthy. Shepards Pie and Mexican Style Brown Rice Casserole. Steve: Almonds and the Mexican Style Brown Rice Casserole.
14.Are there any foods you’re tempted by? Laurie: Anything where sugar is the first word listed in the ingredients. Steve: Fast food. How do you deal with that? Laurie: Chewing gum, orange cinnamon tea, an occasional piece of hard candy. Steve: Pack a lunch.
15.How will you stay motivated to keep it up after the competition? Laurie: The key for me has been and will continue to be doing this together. Our habits have changed and are changing together. I couldn't have done as well as I have done without doing this with Steve. Steve: I feel so great. That's motivation enough.
16.What’s the best advice you can give someone who’s struggling with his or her weight? Laurie: Find a partner to share the experience with. I also discovered a free web-site, sparkpeople.com It is truly amazing. I'm recommending it to everyone who comments about my weight loss. Steve: Keep at it.
