Some days are just so hectic. With kids and work and sports and the list goes on and on.
Some days it is just hard to make it to the gym to work out. Especially rite now, and as nice as the weather is getting. But it is more than just that?
We as parents, we normally have a ton of things going on with our spouse and kids, events and sports and work. We are normally so busy with our day to day lives that we normally put ourselves last! In doing that we end up teaching our kids by example bad habits and pour eating and nutrition. Which between that and video games and lack of priority towards exercise is the real reason child and adult obesity is at a all time high.
My wife and i started this journey over 10 years ago and had to quit because of our children and day to day lives. We owned and were running 2 businesses and trying to raise our kids. We were putting everything before us as a priority. We got caught up in the rat race and was loosing our battle with our weight and health. I ballooned to over 420 pounds and my wife put on a few pounds as well. Then one night my chest started killing me and i couldn't breath. My wife took me to the hospital and my hart was out of rhythm and they couldn't get it back in until the next day. They didn't rule it as a hart attack but it scared me a little. The Dr told me that they thought the cause was stress and diet. But i didn't listen to what they had to say. I thought i wasn't under that much stress, I was used to working 18 to 20 hours a day for almost 12 years. Well long story short it happened again. That time it got my attention because my colestral was up and my blood pressure was up and i was getting really bad head aches. This is about the time when i truly realized how bad i truly was out of shape.
My wife and i started talking about the problems (health and in life) we were having and how it was affecting our kids and something had to change. So we made the commitment, this is going to be our year, and it is time to put us first. Since we have made this commitment we have had our days that we didn't want to go to the gym. We were tired, or the weather was too nice. But then we started feeding on each other and kept each other accountable for this. At the time this is the first battle we had to over come. I figured out that if we could make it to the parking lot of the gym that we had already won the battle against the war.
Once we got to the gym we started feeling better about being there and rite after our work out we instantly felt better. Not just because we were exorcising but because we started realizing that we were working towards winning the war. The war was excuses and putting our self's last. Now we are past that battle and working on the battle of loosing all this body fat and continue to keep each other motivated. By winning these battles our kids have been asking more questions about healthy eating and how important it is to exorcise. That's when i looked at my wife and realized that this decision has affected more than just us. It has helped our children start winning the battle against being over weight and out of shape.
Its hard to keep that person you look at in the mirror every day doing what he or she is supposed to do. But if you can have some one else to help keep you accountable and keep you motivated the war is not that hard to win. Be have made so much progress and have a long way to go but we are feeding off of each other and keep raising the bar on what we can do.
If you want to win this war against peer pressure and bad habits just try to find some one close to you and keep each other accountable. If they are holding back get after them and have them raise the bar. They will do the same for you when you are having a off day.
If this helps one person start their journey towards a healthier life style then it will make me a happy man. I know how hard it is to be so busy that you cant even think but it truly does make you feel better to put your self first for a change.
