One slice of pizza is an hour at the gym

When I am at the gym and not taking a fitness class, I like to listen to Jillian Michaels' podcast to pass the time on the machines. Recently she had Bob Harper on the show, which was cool! They said something to a caller that really kind of hit me upside the head: One slice of pizza is an hour at the gym. Of course; a slice of pizza is around 400 calories. But when they put it in that context, it makes so much sense why so many of us are struggling and why weight loss can be such a slow process. I often make this mistake. I work my butt off at the gym, then later in the day I will have something so small and high-calorie, such as a couple of cookies, and there go all those calories I saved. I've been at this for a while, so I know I should choose foods that give me more bang for my calorie buck, even (or especially) if I am in maintenance mode when it seems easier to slack on the eating somewhat. This was a good reminder to eat mindfully.

    Hi Mila, I agree, we have something little and it can erase or ruin all our hard work. It's an interesting concept about a slice of pizza is an hour at the gym.
    Glad I came looking for blogs, since the race is over, I now have the time to run it myself, so I am currently in Iceland, so I am reading and commenting on blogs, but most of the current ones I had already read and commented on, so this is quite the challenge for me!

    That is a great reminder! It totally makes sense, but I've never thought about it that way before. I need these reminders and wake-up calls every once and a while to really help me focus on what I'm putting into my body and why.

    Oh sheesh... That makes me scared to eat another slice of pizza! Especially since I usually have AT LEAST 2! And the funniest thing is, I was actually thinking of having pizza for dinner tonight. Now I'm thinkin' "maybe not".

    I'm in agreement with you. This process does require a lot of work and commitment. Eating mindfully is so important so as not to derail all that hard work. I have a slow metabolism by nature so the last thing i"m going to reach for is pizza now that I know how many calories I can handle a day.

    Eating "mindfully" is really the key. Today I am in my ranges for calories, proteins, carbs, and fats and that includes 2 pieces of pizza (my family's Friday night tradition). I get into to trouble when I do not eat to plan, but almost anything can be worked into a balanced nutrition plan occasionally.

    BTW, you look great. Congratulations on your success!

    That's so true! I know that things are a certain amount of calories, but thinking about the actual time I'd have to spend at the gym puts things into a totally different perspective! I'm going to have to remember this the next time I want to indulge :) I'll still indulge, mind you, but I'll be fully aware!

    Just want to say that if the pizza is just part of the daily intake you need to fuel your body, it is not an hour at the gym. Your body needs calories just to exist, so any food can be figured in. As you say, it depends on how satisfying it is to you. I've had a nice slice of pizza and raw veggies for lunch or dinner and been very content. But if you feel that it's a danger food for you now, best wait until your tastes have changed so that you don't need so much. And enjoy the movement, too! emoticon
