I think a student complimented me today

Friday, April 29, 2011

But I'm not sure, LOL!

One student came rushing in during the middle of class - she said she had to stay at science class, she was finishing her project that was due today. I explained that she'd be absent from my class, but that she had to do what she had to do. I also asked if student X was also over in science, because she had a painting to turn in today for an exhibit. Apparently student X was there - I sent a message back to X with this student. I asked my class if a teacher would normally give a student a note before sending them to a teacher to ask for the student to work in their class (which is what I always do) - students said most teachers expect the student to ask for a note, they wouldn't normally just give one. I sighed and said, it's professional courtesy. So little Mr. Heart-throb kid said, "well, that's it Ms. Schwartz, PROFESSIONAL."

I guess they think I'm more professional about being a teacher? I'm still not too sure.

Sounds like some good respect you got from that student!

I teach at a college, and it is just amazing to me how much the students feel that it is OK to just miss class! (Many of them are not passing! But they don't make the connection!) Recently a woman skipped my class to go to a presentation on Test Anxiety! She later told me it was a big waste of time and that they just told them to breathe... I think going to your math class is usually a better choice!

Nice to be recognized: my students taught me (during my teaching days) that they don't miss much, and they are evaluating us all the time!!

Yeah, that was my take on it. (I can't believe the number of teachers who kick students out of class, or don't hold class when the power is out, or are late to class, or any number of things. This is our JOB - we should treat it as such!) Anyway........

I think the students know what is up. They may see you as more professional than some other teachers. They also may be separating out professional courtesy from other courtesies, but my bet is you treat your students with dignity and respect. Some teachers do, and others are not as specific. It also might be the students thought what was being asked for was petty and not, well, professional. They could be wrong of course, but it does surprise me given how some students I work with assume they can take liberties. Other students really nail teachers personalities. Sadly many students are taken advantage of.

I think you received a professional compliment.
