Pushing through barriers...

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

When I got my elliptical machine a few weeks ago it just about wiped me out to go 5 minutes at a slow pace. Earlier this week a friend suggested I play "mental games" with the digital display to get more workout time.

She said if you reach say your stride goal - look at the time and mileage and pick one of those two and press on until you reach the next "1/10 of a mile or minute". I started doing this. I would get to say 10 minutes and I would push on to even out the 1/10ths of a mile then to get to the next 25 on stride count and then to the next full minute.

Today, less than a week since she suggested I do that I finally pushed through the barrier. I do plan to get back on the elliptical yet again tonight but so far I have a whopping:

59 minutes
.95 of a mile
3346 strides

Thank you Mel for the giving me another "tool" to push my fitness through a barrier!

IF this 55 year old, 267 lb, double knee implant woman can do it - you can too!

Press On!

    Hi PINKHOPE;

It is great you have someone to help you and you just keep adding a little at a time. That is the way I do things because my strength is not strong now and I get weak fast. I still do my exercise and walk 10,000 steps or more, eat healthy too strengthen myself. Go to the Dr. tomorrow to see what is happening and may have to start chemo but that is okay, I am a fighter.

Stay focused on your healthy life style, eat healthy and continue your exercise. God bless you always. Learn from Spark people every day.

The elliptical is tough. I am just like you, I could only go to 5 minutes before resting when I first did it. I'm proud to say that yesterday I went a whole 21 minutes on the elliptical without resting! It does get better with practice, and you will have good and bad days.

Great job, elliptical machine really works your body. Now if sweat were only burned calories, just think how lean we would be..... LOL

You are rocking that elliptical and that is no small feat! It is probably 80% mental and 20% physical when it comes down to it. Mind over motion and guess who won?!* Yea Suzanne!

It is exciting to overcome ourselves. I did a 5K walk last week, and was so excited as I strode the last half mile - you'd think I'd won the Boston Marathon.

Way to go, barrier-breaker!

Great Blog! Your friend gave you great advice. This is a "game" I've played with myself on the treadmill. Having to get to a certain time or 20 more calories or have to finish the half mile. It is a great motivator to extend the workout and get better results.

Great blog, thanks for sharing and keep up the great work..I have been slacking lately on my strength training..I usually do about 10 to 15 minutes six days a week..except the past week I have found myself "too busy" to do my few exercises every day..

Reading about your struggle to build up your time and endurance inspires me to refocus on my goals and get back to the weights daily. I vary my cardio routine most every day so I don't get bored with it..I just need to think of a "mind game" that will help motivate me to get the most out of my strength workout emoticon
