Alternate Universe!

Something completely WEIRD happened this morning! For breakfast, I was making steel-cut oatmeal w/ cinnamon, a whole chopped apple, & a tablespoon of dried berries, which was all going to be topped w/ 2 tbsp of vanilla yogurt & 1 tbsp of sliced almonds. However, as I started to put the cooked "1 serving" (as stated on the box) of oatmeal into my bowl, I realized that it was actually going to be too much for me to eat.

I had eaten the same entire recipe a few weeks ago & was definitely overly full afterwards. So, this morning, I decided that even if it was supposed to be one serving, I could choose to eat half of the oatmeal/apple/raisin mixture w/ the full amount of yogurt & almonds for breakfast & if I felt like eating the rest as a snack or for another day, I could. A true epiphany for me!

Am sure this seems all too obvious to most people, but realizing that I can choose to eat smaller amounts of some things is really freeing for me! It means that I can use those calories for other times of the day - Hallelujah!

    It's not so obvious to most people. The first time I read that a serving of pasta is 1/2 cup and a serving of meat is 3 oz, I was sure it was a misprint. It never occured to me that portion sizes on packages and in cookbooks are often way over the nutritional recommendations. So are restaurant meals. Knowledge is power! I feel physically better eating recommended portions. The added benefit was the food bill was cut nearly in half.
