Such a funny word. Serendipity. Sounds made up, doesn't it? Actually, it is: from - "Origin: 1754; Serendip + -ity; Horace Walpole so named a faculty possessed by the heroes of a fairy tale called The Three Princes of Serendip "

Serendipity. Luck. Good fortune. Chance. Or, as the dictionary says, making desirable discoveries happen by accident. Just a few minutes in either direction, and the situation changes totally. Think about how many accidents we avoid by one minute in either direction. Or how our attitude changes the situation - if we are open to an experience, it is so much better than if we were expecting things to not work out. Or we meet someone and they become our new friend, because we were open to it. Or they become a new enemy, because we (or they) were having a bad day and we just clashed. We try a new food, a new exercise, a new pair of shoes - and half of our perception (maybe more) is all based on our attitude - and the rest is based on the situation, the timing, and things over which we have no control. Luck. Chance.

My brother was on a jet that left St. Louis 30 minutes before the tornado hit. Just 30 minutes. Had he booked a different flight, or had the schedule been different, he would have been there for the tornado. He didn't even know there WAS a tornado until he was back in Seattle.

I fell and tore out my knee after a hurricane (slid in the mud and leaves on a stair) - had I driven up 5 minutes later, I'd have been able to park in the lower lot and not had to walk down those same stairs - I'd have avoided the fall, the injury, the two surgeries, and the resulting deterioration now. I'd have avoided gaining 40 lbs from being in a leg brace for 4 months. And the really funny part - I wouldn't even have KNOWN that I had avoided all of that!!!!!!

Serendipity. Most of the time, we make things happen the way we want them to. And we don't even know it. It's when our serendipity fails us that we feel unlucky, that bad things always happen to us.

But the bad things don't ALWAYS happen to us. They happen occasionally. Infrequently. Or more frequently than we might wish. But all of those moments when something bad DOESN'T happen - that is serendipitous. We are making desirable results. We don't even know it. We aren't aware. But we are synchronized with the universe, and we are avoiding all kinds of disasters, without knowing it.

We once met some people who had named their daughter "Seren": apparently she was more good luck than good management! Have to wonder how that's worked for her over the years. (No, her middle name was not "Dippity" so far as I know).
