Important Daily Habits
1. Brush teeth 2 times a day
2. Drink milk for strong bones
3. Sleep 6-7 hours a night
4. Eat fruits & veggies
5. EXERCISE DAILY
Um, excuse me....WHAT was that last entry on the list?!? DAILY exercise? Are you kidding me?!?
Nope...not kidding. We do so many things every day that are just plain old habit--part of the way we live our lives. For some it might be logging on to Facebook every morning. Or watching the evening news. Reading a book before bed. Brushing our teeth & showering daily.
So why do people ask "how do I fit in quick exercises?" or "how do I find time to exercise?" You don't find time--you MAKE TIME.
For me, I exercise FIRST THING every single day--7 days a week. Your heart & lungs need cardio daily. You only need to take "recovery breaks" for your muscles when you lift weights--so for that, every other day is healthier.
Personally, exercise is my ME TIME. It keeps me healthy mentally--it makes me happy & keeps my brain focused. I don't need antidepressants anymore. I feel fantastic & optimistic from the natural exercise endorphins!
I also don't take any meds for my Inflammatory Bowel Disease either--I can keep my gut moving like it should just by exercising & eating healthy. No more meds for constipation or diarrhea or heartburn or gut pain. Thank goodness!
Plus my joints stop creaking & my muscles loosen up when I exercise daily. I don't feel stiff & out-of-sorts when I exercise every morning. I feel like Superwoman who can face a busy day as a wife & mom! I feel in better shape now at 36 than I did at 26!
The deep dark secret that nobody really wants to think about when they're losing weight (myself included!) is that this process is NOT A DIET. When you're in the trenches, each pound lost is a hard-fought battle--and it certainly feels like a diet. But a diet has an END. A finish line.
There is NO END here--when you reach your goal weight you have to start maintaining that weight loss. And lemme tell ya--after almost 3 years of maintaining 70 lbs lost--it's HARD WORK. Maintaining takes more work & dedication than losing did!
When I was losing weight I only exercised 30-45 minutes every morning--it was fast, it was easy...and with careful calorie counting I lost 1 lb per week. NOW....sheesh. It takes me 60-90 minutes (or more!) of daily exercise to maintain. My body is just DYING to gain weight back....I need to keep challenging myself physically to keep the weight off. Granted, I also need to find better will power when it comes to Baked Cheetos & Baked BBQ chips....but that's a topic for a whole new blog entry. wink, wink
And do you need fancy clothes or a gym membership or expensive equipment?!? NOPE. Trust me, you don't look any thinner in expensive designer yoga pants--when you're a Chunky Monkey, $5 sweatpants & a t-shirt are all you need for workout clothes. You can't hide behind black spandex--doesn't make any difference.
ALL YOU NEED IS YOU! A decent pair of tennis shoes, a sports bra with some elastic left in it, and YOU. Just get up--get those sweats & tennies on....and hit the road. When the weather is bad you can walk in a mall or do laps inside the closest Walmart. Or jump rope or dance in your kitchen. Record an exercise show off of tv--usually there are some aerobics being shown at o'dark-thirty every day! JUST MOVE!
Do you want to end up using a walker when you're 75 years old? Or do you want to be walking 10k races when you're 80? Do you want to feel good & look good every day, every year?
Then make exercise a daily habit....and remember that it's just part of life. Brushing teeth, sleeping, daily exercise. It'll change your life NOW--and keep you LIVING LONG into the future! :)
