I'm watching my grand-kids for a few days and made that favorite of most children, macaroni & cheese. I made the boxed kind......never again! I happened to look at the calories for a single serving of one cup.......400 calories and not much nutrition.
It made me think back to my former fat self. I used to make a box and eat the whole thing; that's 1200 calories for just one meal. That calorie count didn't include the soda I had with it or anything else that happened to catch my eye and appetite. Yikes.....no wonder I was over 260 pounds.
As usual, this taught me cooking from scratch with lots of fruits, veggies and whole grains is best!
Its an eye opener isn't it. Homemade mac and cheese is a favorite with my boys. Although I have never checked the calorie count on it. Probably not low either. You are doing so good. Keep up the good work! 2011 days ago
I am a food label junkie! My sweet daughter is prone to give our little grandaughter way too much sugar, so on my visit I am hoping to move her more toward fruit rather than sweets, we will see. 2014 days ago
Wow! I never really looked at the calorie amount! No more boxed mac'n cheese for my daughter. She loves it. I usually make the homemade kind but occasionally we have made it for convenience reasons. No more! Thanks! ML 2014 days ago
WOW I used to eat a whole box too! My mother always added some sort of meat so we had protein too. I try to keep that going when I make it now its usually a side dish instead of the whole meal! 2016 days ago
Isn't it amazing?! I have a family box in our cupboard and it just gathering dust. I am hoping that my son has a food drive very soon so I can donate the calorie monster and not have to throw it out! That is probably the biggest reason that I made the change I did....figuring out how many calories I was actually consuming on a daily basis. No wonder I got to over 325 pounds! We need to be proud of ourselves Terry and share with all who are willing to listen our "secret." I know what you mean hard to believe so many calories for so little,we used to eat alot of it too not anymore and plus so full of sodium not good!Cooking from scratch and more veggies and fruit alot better for us!!! 2016 days ago
