New Zumba DVD Review: Activate (45 Minute Beginner DVD)

Monday, April 11, 2011

Pleasant surprise on Friday...I got my new Zumba Exhilarate DVD set! I previewed all the DVD's over the weekend and they all look AWESOME. Normally when ordering a DVD set I utilize 3 out of the 5 that are given to me...not even. I will always use the main cardio one consistently and add in others to mix it up here and there.

However with this DVD I can honestly say I will probably utilize 6/7 (the one being the Basic Steps DVD- which if you are new to Zumba would be helpful but is not a cardio DVD, it is a great learning tool).

I will write a review of all the DVD's in a later blog but I am currently going to just do the Activate DVD since it is what I did on Sunday.

The DVD features my fav, Tanya and Gina. They have some great back up people as well. The work out is comparable to a Zumba Basic Gold class. It gives you enough flavor for what Zumba is about without freaking out a newbie and also entertaining and getting a great sweat for a Zumba addict.

The songs are medium pace. Starts out slow and builds up about ten minutes in. Lots of moves include repetitive meringue and salsa. You really get to shake your hips and some great moves for building your core. The choreo is great and Gina and Tanya add their own flavor into moves which motivates you to do some extra wiggles for mixing it up.

The DVD runs for about 40 minutes. I wore a calorie watch and burned 490 calories. HOWEVER, keep in mind when they do a little jump...I do a big jump. When they are standing there clapping and skipping around the floor set....I am shaking it as hard as I can or jumpin around to get a bigger burn. Also, when they are doing a simple fun salsa without arms...I make sure to add arms to it. I try and do little extra things to make the burn bigger. It is what you make it.

As a Zumba vet, normally I would have discarded a beginner DVD in the pile of ones I planned not to utilize unless I was extremely lazy or had someone new with me.

BUT, I can honestly say I will actually be using the Activate DVD for part of my regular routine. It is a lot of fun, great dance moves, and a great burn. Since it is 40 minutes I am probably going to do it in conjunction with the RUSH 20 minute workout (another DVD I would have normally discarded in the useless pile, but previewed and discovered it looked awesome!).

Combining these two DVD's into one hour long work out would suffice for any Zumba novice to get a great sweat session in. The songs and choreo feel like you are at a real class. They are very similar. You do not feel like you are watching a DVD and going through the motions, rather enjoying yourself with some friends.

Hope that helps for people who are considering getting the set :)

Keep in mind this is coming from a Zumba addict who does classes and also uses the last DVD set. I mainly did the Live Fitness Concert from the last set and sometimes the cardio party. I did not find those DVD's comparable to a Zumba class but did get a great cardio burn from them and enjoyed it.

I'm thinking of joining a Zumba class but I'm concerned about learning the steps - two or sometimes 3 left feet. This sounds nice.

Yup. I have heard other people who have purchased it through their instructor (I am sure you could ask and see if you get a discount- not sure how that works).

    All the DVD's seem great.

Awesome blog! I am in Zumba classes twice a week and I LOVE it. I bought the Zumba for Wii and I LOVE it. I might have to get those DVDs. Did you buy them through the Zumba website?
