Walk to Jog Progess

Tuesday, February 06, 2007

I just wanted to start blogging this for myself. Last Thursday, Feb 01, I changed from my mostly walking morning exercise to the walk -jog program. It took 2 days to really dial it in and figure out where I needed to start since I had been walking for a month...with some jogging in there.

I believe jogging will be key to my weightloss and the changes I want to see in my stomach and rear.

I started at Week 3 of the program...and in 3 more days will be switching to Week 4. That means adding a minute to my jogging time and increasing my total running time by 4 minutes. I'm a tad nervous about this. My breathing was not good when I was running somewhere between 2-3 minutes just a month ago. Jogging for 2 minutes and walking for 3 has provided very adequate recovery for me. I'm excited to push myself...and scared at how difficult it might be. Do I like to jog? NO!

I'll post an update on Thursday when I try the extra minute!

I am so nervous about tomorrow. The weather changed quickly (30 degrees in 2 days) and it was very moist/foggy Wed and Thursday. I could feel the difference in my breathing so I didn't go for the extra minute this morning. This is all such a new experience as the wacky weather continues to throw changes my way. Tomorrow is the day tho, unless we have rain. Then, I'll have to find a dry time during the day to work out.

I DID IT, I DID IT! Hooray! I had trouble setting my watch so I pushed myself even over 3 minutes on my first run...I recovered nicely with the 3 minute walk after, no wheezing like before--Hooray! I finished about the normal time under 26.5 minutes. I can tell I'm going to need to add a couple blocks soon to get it back to 30 minutes.
5 min walk
3 min run 3 min walk
3 min run 3 min walk
3 min run 3 min walk
1.5 min run (at home)

I didn't try the 4 minutes today; I decided to stay at 3 minutes for one more week. I have a kink in my neck and the 3 minute intervals are still challenging for me. Next week.

I beat the rain again today. Jeremy and I just narrowly missed the rain one weekend morning; we no sooner had closed the front door and the rain clouds just let loose. Thankfully, we were safe and dry inside. Even tho I felt sprinkles this morning, I proceeded with my morning ritual. The rest of my walk/run was dry...and my workout is done for the day! Hooray!

2-24-07 (4:3)
4 minutes today. I took yesterday off because of drizzle and sore knees...and moved to the 4 minute runs today. I did pretty well...even Jeremy said so. Hooray, it looks like I am really making progress.

3-2-07 (4:2 - 36:00 minutes)
Knees are feeling much better, still starting with SLOW jogging, but that seems to be a great warm up for them. Today I set my alarm 15 minutes earlier so I could add about 10 minutes to my routine and decreased my walking by a minute. WIN! WIN!

I'm still at the 4 minute runs. It feels like that is really where I'm comfortable...but I guess it's not about being comfortable. I love the walking, the running, eh, I could pass. I've missed a few mornings for various reasons (but, really just a few since Jan., but I was able to do 30 minutes on the exercise bike instead.

3-29-07 (5:2 - 36:00 minutes)
Yahoo! 5 minute intervals! It's not about being comfortable, right?

4-5-07 (6:2 - 37:00 minutes)
Moving right along, 6 minute intervals. That week was all treadmill as we were vacationing.

Kids are on spring break and my High Schooler away on a Mission Trip. Not sure about leaving the kids alone while I run. Maybe I'll get up while DH is showering for the rest of the week.

Life gets really busy sometimes! I've still kept up with my walking/jogging in the morning and my healthy eating despite my lack of logging in and listing the food I've eaten. I still don't own a scale, but I did buy smaller (size 6...which look like my 8s) shorts. I feel like I'm cheating bits...and that is driving me crazy. Well, it's driving me crazy that it's bothering me. But, I guess it's a healthy thing. Kids are home for the summer so walking in the AM is not as easy. I've been walking during Josh's All Star Practice at night if I don't do it in the morning.

That's awesome Lynn! I'm so glad you can feel the difference in your breathing and your shorter recovery times. Keep up the work and you'll be adding a whole load of blocks to increase your route!
