Day 95 - It's official: I enjoy exercise

It's official: I actually ENJOY exercise.

emoticon

Now, that is not anything I ever expected. When I started SP on January 1, I set a (seemingly unattainable) goal of 10 minutes of exercise per day. I told myself, "come on, you can do SOME kind of fitness activity for 10 minutes a day!" And believe me, that was a chore!

Of course, that 10-minute-a day goal quickly changed to a 31-minute-a-day goal, but still: CHORE. But from time-to-time I would do "extra" fitness above and beyond my daily goal. But those "extra" minutes have become more frequent.

Like today, after work I took off for the "Y" to ride the Expresso cycle, which I love! I used to hate riding a stationary bike, but the Expresso has the video screen and all of those picturesque routes. I love choosing a different virtual location each time.

This afternoon I chose the "Fruitdale" route, which is a 4.4 mile trail. Not far into it, I KNEW I was going to go around a second time (and I did). But then, near the end of the second lap, I decided to go around a THIRD time. I decided to do the trail again because the exercise felt really good. I was enjoying it and did not want it to end. Now how is that for a transformation, folks?

emoticon

At the end of the day, I traveled 13.27 miles in 62 non-stop minutes. Not too shabby for a plump, middle-aged lady.

Spark on, my friends!

I've come to love it too. I changed my mindset regarding it over time and instead of thinking of exercise as a chore I think of it as fun...the worst part for me now is rest days! I know I need them but I get so twitchy on rest days. I'm more active in general these days too. Need to work on that a little more but definitely getting there!

You give me hope! I still find it a chore, one that I will go to great lengths to avoid. I'm working on it... and I have to admit I'm actually having a little bit of success in seeing it as FUN. And I certainly have noticed that I never walk out of the gym thinking to myself, "Man, I wish I hadn't done THAT!"

Way to go Jenn! Thanks for inspiring us! I'm beginning again (!) and have also given myself small exercise goals to start with. Like you, I trust that I will want to do more and more because I'm actually enjoying it! I can't remember if it was a blog or an article I read, but the person was saying that when we were small, it was called "fun", not exercise and we had lots of it! That has really been helping me to make a mind shift too. Now I get up in the morning looking forward to my 15 minutes of fun! emoticon

I hope I can get to the "like" phase - right now, I know it makes me feel better, and that's what keeps me going. Congratulations!

That sounds like fun!! I wish my gym had an exercise bike like that. Or had something like that for the arc trainer (my present favorite!). I spend an hour a day on it. I watch the tv at the gym, but it would be fun to have a screen with things to challenge me!

That is emoticon , I feel the same way the more I do my workouts the more I want to do it. Isn't great how our bodies start to adapt and want more without us feeling it or knowing it until it is already asking for it.

Have you thought of doing some group exercise classes? I find them to be so much fun! I would do them for fun alone. Since you love cycling, you could try a spin class. If you like to dance, Zumba is tons of cardio and fun. You could do aerobics, other kinds of dance, strength training classes... I find them so easily motivating. It also helps that you feel like a member of that community and that feeling motivates you to go regularly at the set time each week. Once you get to know the instructor and/or other people in the class they will ask you where you were if you miss one! :)

Oh, I am so proud of you! I've been riding a NuStep at my Y. It is sorta a combination of elipical and bike. I call it my "sit-down elipical". Can't do any others yet, trainer won't let me due to hip surgery. I've only made 2 miles at a time, but you are an inspiration to me. emoticon

I ride a stationary bike almost every day also. I start riding thinking I will ride for only 30-60 minutes and sometimes end up riding for 70-90 minutes. My bike sets in front of the TV where I can watch the today show which makes time fly. Keep riding you are doing great!!!
