I will be the first to admit that over the past 30 years I have done a lot of eating because I am bored. Living in a western society like we do with a vast array of things to do, see, and experience one has to ask - WHY do we choose to eat when we are bored? I think there are several contributing factors.
1) Food is easily accessible.
2) Food is pleasing on the tongue, in the gut, and to our brain.
3) Overeaters tend to be "oral" people.
4) Habit - It's what we did before so we do it again.
As the weight is coming off my life is returning to a more normal activity level and as I find myself getting busier I find I eat less from boredom. Also, if my hands are busy they can't be shoveling food into my mouth so the key here is to find something to cure your boredom that won't also allow you to eat.
Needlework (you don't want to get food on your yarn or cross stitch fabric)
Painting, Drawing, Sculpting
Gardening (who wants to eat with muddy hands?)
Exercise & Wii (get moving and keep those hands busy too - grab some dumbbells)
Remodeling (Painting, papering, moving furniture, spring cleaning)
Nature Photography - get out there with your camera and capture SPRING!
Volunteer Work - Habitat for Humanity, Parks & Recreation Programs, Litter Pickup
Dog-walking (volunteer to walk your neighbor's dogs)
As you see you have to choose pastimes that are not seated (i.e. reading a book) as then you can still SHOVEL food into your mouth. The key is to keep those hands busy too!
Try to do something today to BEAT boredom without FOOD!
