Row Row Row Your Boat...!

Monday, April 04, 2011

So today I mixed it up at Riverwalk by putting in a half hour on the rowing machine. Tried it before but for only 15 mins. After bumping up the time today I could see how this offers quite the workout! I had fun bumping up the resistance numbers or whatever they are...DVD / VCR dummy that I am I'm a bit stymied by the numbers diagram on the instructional sheet:

ingStarted.pdf

All I know is that when I pulled harder the big number rose. My baseline was around 700 but I'd ramp it up to over 1,000 off and on to get a sort of interval effect. Past the 15 min. mark I started to work up a pretty good sweat and could start to really "feel" it in my shoulders...which I LIKE!

Gotta say my quads are telling me all about my 5K and ride yesterday...! It's a good soreness. I feel it almost every time I stand up or sit down.

Which reminds me of a lovely story about one of my heroes, Jack LaLanne:

A fellow is interviewing Jack and asks him how to "find time" for working out.

Jack is like: There is ALWAYS time. You don't need any equipment. Your body has all it needs to work out. So the fellow asks him for suggestions.

Jack: Stand up! No, don't use your hands. Stand up. Now sit down...no hands! Stand up again! S-l-o-w-l-y! Keep your back straight! Sit down! Slowly too! Hold it. Don't sit all the way down. Hold it for just a few seconds. Sit all the way down. Stand up again, but stop in the middle...

The poor guy didn't know what hit him! :-)

Nice workout this morning alternating between elliptical, ST, rower and another set of ST. Only wish I could have gotten there a smidgen earlier to nail some pool time...!

Keep on keepin' on my SparkFamily!

Don

ps...I can SO much better deal with a dreary soggy Monday after racking up the beautiful weather we enjoyed this weekend! Greedy ol' me is hoping for another one coming up!

I prefer erg machines that just show power output in terms of Watts. Easier to follow.

And yeah, if you're really pushing yourself you can burn a lot of calories fast on one of those.

@ MRDPOLING, they DO have kayak simulators. See the comment I left on your page. I also sent you an invitation to the kayakers team here on SP where I've filled up the team links with all kinds of suggestions for off-season training routines and exercises. You can definitely work your oblique abs off the water - which are your main paddling muscles if you're doing it right.

Love the Jack LaLane story. What an icon he was!

Definitely think the 1000 in 16 days is doable. :)

The forecast isn't looking that great for the weekend, but I'd like to keep my no-rain-on-race-day going!

I was using that same type of rowing maching this winter. Really enjoyed the change of workouts! I think the longest I did was 15minutes, though. Enjoy your workouts!

I wish they had a rowing machine for Kayakers. I'd love to work on those muscles in the gym so that it makes it easier on me come late spring or early summer when I get to hit the water again.

Bet your shoulders will join your achy legs tomorrow! We have a rower at the Y. I ought to try it. I get bored with the same upper body ST machines. I'm looking more and more at getting a bike - especially since my daughter has struck up a friendship with a cute, single, bike shop owner! Lol!

Sounds like an awesome workout to me! Don't worry.. I caught your pool time for you today! :) Finally after trying to find the best time where i'm not clunking into people while sharing a lane and it's 6:30pm.. I had the pool to myself there for awhile... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
