A Glimpse at Maintenance

I love my Mother. I lost her when we were both way too young. She was all kinds of amazing. She was especially a good country cook. Many of her recipes were handed down, including her potato salad.

It is always a special event when my family gets together. And what do you serve at special events? The families favorite recipe...potato salad! I have been trusted with Mom's recipe box. That's where you will find, on a small yellow scrap of paper written in red ink, the dressing recipe. Real mayonnaise...sugar...mustard..
.(the rest is too secret to share ;-) ) Talk about intense calories!

Well last weekend was one such occasion. To make a wonderfully long story short, between 7 of us we ate 5 pounds of Mom's potato salad. When I stepped on the scale on Monday I weighed 2 pounds more that I did on Friday. My weigh in is Wednesday and I did not want to show a gain!

Without even thinking about it I shifted into "maintenance mode". I ate the low end of my caloric intake per day and turned up the volume on my exercise. To my surprise I was back down the 2 pounds I gained over the weekend!

My ah ha moment of the week is the idea that someone who has reached their goal weight, someone who is in maintenance, someone who is "skinny" still pays attention to what they weigh. If they have a pound or two gain they don't freak out, emotionally eat, think it's the end of the world. They just buckle down and take it off!

A glimpse at maintenance...a great lesson learned.

Love it! And, truly, there's nothing like the precious memories that come with making favorite childhood foods. You did a great job of re adjusting your eating and activity to back track the extra weight.

I have to share - my mom's 82. She eats everything and anything she wants. She weighs herself every day (something I don't want to do but it works for her) and if she finds herself up a little bit, she cuts back for a day or so. She's been the same weight for years.

    Tried and true!
