3.30.11 Meningitis Update

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

There has been so much improvement. The power of prayer has been strongly evidenced. Thanks to everyone who has read this and to those of you who have responded.

My boss' son, he is in his 30's, has continued to improve in most ways and prayers are still needed. His vision in his only good eye is extremely poor now. He is also having some short term memory deficit. Sometimes he remembers things when he is reminded, though.

He will be discharged home with a central line. In most cases, people would be sent to rehab in that case, but he is uninsured. His wife will be taught how to care for that equipment. Here is the Wikipedia page on central lines.

HUGS and prayers. My son had viral memingitis at 10 months and nearly died. He did suffer some hearing loss but not much. He then was diagnosed with crohns disease at age 17. now at 35 he is well, has to take care but so far doing well.
Miracles and prayer do help.
Continued hope for this young man and all his caregivers.

What a terrifying time for all! This is where I am thankful for our system - those in this sort of need don't require insurance because it is on the Public Health System. I am sending good vibes for a speedy recovery!

If you can, ask if he had his hearing tested. Bacterial meningitis can lead to ossification of the cochlea, which means the inner ear organ itself will harden and hearing loss will develop. If it is caught soon enough, a cochlear implant can be put in, but it has to be done in a timely manner because this process of ossification happens quickly.
