From Wheelchair to 1 Mile Walker :)

Yesterday was a momentous day for me. I have come so far. Severe arthritis and obesity had robbed me of my mobility. I was reduced to rolling my way down halls, through airports, and hospitals unable to walk more than a few short steps.

I had total knee replacement in both knees a year and a half apart. I lay in ICU with kidney failure and other complications. I was 328 pounds. I had a bleak future.

That was then. Yesterday - 8 months after starting my journey here at Sparkpeople - I walked a mile. I walked it in 21 minutes! No cane, no limp, head up and a big smile on my face.

I've lost 58.4 pounds so far. Just that loss has changed my life. You can't do it overnight, but you CAN do it. It takes consistency. You must persevere. Soon a 1 pound or 1/2 pound loss adds up. Soon you move from 1 minute of exercise to 45 minutes of exercise. You start small and work your way up.

If I can do this, you can do this. I'm 55 years old but I feel as if I've got a future again. Come join me on the journey, won't you? Let's do this!

It's so easy to get discouraged when you can't do a lot or think you need to do "more". You're truly living proof that small bits of progress add up to miracles! You rock!

Wow! What a wonderful success story! Thank you for sharing. My mom has severe Rhuemetoid Arthritis, she is just a little older than you. Thankfully she is still mobile but having a lot of troubles with her feet lately. I wish you well and a lot of continued success! I am just begining my journey. I have been with SparkPeople for 2 1/2 weeks and I have lost 4 pounds now. I am only trying to loose about 20 pounds or so to get to a healthier weight, but no matter what our goals are, they are all just as important. What is that saying... "The journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step!" I like that phrase! emoticon emoticon

After starting my blog with such negativity today, you are the angel that I needed. I'm so happy for you and your progress. I wish you continued success with you goals. I too went from walking half a block with a cane to over 2 miles this past summer, but I have since regained most of my weight. Thank you for giving me the inspiration that I needed today. emoticon

Thanks for sharing your story with us! I have arthritis, and was stricken with a second bout with gout just recently (after four years). Am walking with a cane, because I have not "bounced back" like last time. Your story is a wake up call for me. Losing mobility and having to resort to using a wheelchair due to being overweight is absolutely heartbreaking. I am so happy for you that you are on the road to recovery. We are in the same age range (I'm 58), and I am also losing for my health and well being.

Once again, thank you!!
