So, our homework this week in Wellness Community is to look up scriptures that will help us fight various causes for depression. We listed causes like losing a job, relationship stress, and jealousy (having skinny friends). I'm going to post my findings here, but I'd love to hear what helps others as well.
I'd also like to throw out there - wether you have "Clinical" depression or "Situational" depression - God can heal either one! He can change the way chemicals work in your body and He can change your attitude about a situation (or the situation itself).
I've also learned over the years that we like to have excuses even though we say we don't. Even for those of us who are praying to get rid of "x" or seeking some other solution for it, deep down we don't really want it to change. Reality is it's hard work to change bad habits and give up things we like that aren't good for us. Plus, if we're fat or unhealthy or sick then it gives us "reasons" not to have to do things we should be doing. I often have to evaluate my prayers and decide, "Do I REALLY want to get rid of this headache or do I want to get out of this activity I was going to do...?" If I REALLY want to be healthy and REALLY want to be who I'm supposed to be, Jesus will help me make it happen.
How to fight depression caused by:
Death of a loved one - Romans 8:38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Being bullied/persecuted - Romans 8:21, "What then shall we say to these things ? If God is for us, who is against us?"
Sickness - James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick ? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord ; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much
Being Single - 1 Corinthians 7:32 But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord ; 33 but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. The woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit ; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. 35 This I say for your own benefit ; not to put a restraint upon you, but to promote what is appropriate and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord.
